About lovebooks
My identity is primarily caught up in four things - my family, my job, my faith and my hobbies. I'll tell you a little about myself in that order. I am proud to have celebrated my 10 year wedding anniversary in the summer of 2002. My wife and I have two sons - my oldest is 6, my youngest is 2 1/2 (as of February 2003). My family is of utmost importance to me. I love playing with my sons and I love to spend time with my wife. I currently teach at a well respected private university in the Seattle, Washington area. My field is Sociology. I received my BA from Concordia University of Seward, Nebraska, and did my graduate work at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln. (Go Cornhuskers!) I received an MA, did all of my Ph.D. coursework, then stopped about halfway through the dissertation process. (For the record, my dissertation was an analysis of software piracy groups on the Internet - how they created a notion of community and developed group identity). I've taught a wide number of courses, but most recently I've been teaching Introductory Sociology, Socialization, Racial and Ethnic Minorities, Social Theory and Marriage and Family. I am a committed Christian with membership in the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. I attend worship regularly and I'm on the board of Deacons at my church. My faith is important to me and it influences my life to a pretty strong degree, so it's likely to influence how and why I rate things the way I do. Finally, my hobbies. As my user ID suggests, I love books. I love to read - everything from cheap series fiction (ie, Star Trek novels and the Remo William Destroyer line) to non-fiction works like Odd Girl Out: The Hidden Culture of Aggression in Girls. I plan on trying to get many of the books I've read recently posted here. My other primary interest is computers. I love playing around with new technical equiptment. I have an HP Jornada 568 PocketPC, a high-end desktop system and a brand new edition - the Compaq Presario 2105US laptop that I'm writing this on right now. I plan to review all my electronic gadgets, software and the like as time allows. As a side note, I'd like to add that, as a teacher, I gain a great deal of my insight into books from the reactions I get from my students. I tend to pull many ideas into my lectures and often use the premise of a book as a discussion starter. As such, my reviews will often incorporate not just my own insights or reactions, but those of my classes as well. I think that this will increase the value of those reviews and I hope that you'll think so, too.
