When you look at my movie reviews, you'll notice that I rarely rank anything over three stars. This is because I am a tough customer. I want to like every movie that I see, but $8.50 is a lot of money. If having a tough grading scale will help me to spare you from spending that much money on a mediocre movie, then that's what I'm going to do. I don't give examples of ratings 1-3 because there are way too many of them for me to sort out.
This is how my rating schema looks:
* -The movie either sucks in a big bad way to the point that I hate it and everyone involved with it, or it's just not worth anybody's time. This could be because it's boring, uninspired, unpleasant or it's just plain old stupid.
** -This is the rank 50% of the movies get from me. To me, two stars means that the movie wasn't bad, but average. It was sort of amusing, but nothing to write home about and definitely not worth seeing a second time.
*** -This is a good rating for me. It means I liked the movie a lot, but I still had reservations. Not many movies receive this rating, so this is probably for most people what a four star rating is.
**** -This rating is reserved for stellar movies; movies that made me hop up in my seat and scream "Holy Moly that was good!" This is the rating I give to movies that are so good that I drag people to the theater to watch it. Examples of this rating include: Roman Holiday, Good Will Hunting, Lone Star, Fargo, anything with Kevin Spacey and to my utter shame, Titanic.
*****-Movies that are untouchable. This is the type of movie that makes me fall in love with the actors and makes me want to study everything they've done. I will see these movies anytime, anywhere and I would pay full price for the privilege. Examples: Citizen Kane, the Godfather Trilogy, Bunuel's Land with No Bread, Chris Marker's La Jetee, Silence of the Lambs, The Usual Suspects, The Professional, Pulp Fiction.
