About MattCA

To start with, I am a freelance automotive journalist. I have been published in leading automotive publications, including Road & Track Magazine. As you might imagine, I am a genuine "car guy" (the kind that are apparently just born this way), having been obsessed with all things automotive since the age of eleven weeks (according to my mom).
I try hard to make my opinions completely objective at all times (when applicable --after all, they are opinions), and I am likely to be quite candid in expressing them. My writing reads like a personal conversation with a friend --in other words, honest, charismatic, and fun (not to toot my own horn or anything --honk! :-P ). If I publish an opinion about a vehicle, I assure you that I have actually driven (the hell out of) it, and that I do know what I am talking about.
Please remember that my opinions are just that --my opinions. They are not the ONLY way to see things; merely MY way of seeing them. Opinions are like um... feet. ...Everyone has their own, but some ...well, lets just say that some smell better than others. I hope you don't find mine to stink too badly... :-)
The following is the criteria I use to determine how I rate Epinions:
First off, a review must be on-topic. If one starts off talking about how great (or horrible) their new DVD player is, but ends up talking about their favorite film instead, that sort of kills it for me.
I also look for accurate information regarding the product being discussed. If someone misquotes a published statistical figure (for example), I will probably not rate the review highly.
Writing style is important to me as well. If my mind starts wandering while reading a review, you've lost me --and a high rating is unlikely. *Entertain & inform your audience!* Make what we are reading memorable, and you are halfway to winning my heart. :-)
While I am not all that fussy about typos (none of us have an editor here --sigh), I do have a problem with serious grammatical errors and excessive slang. Statements such as "It's da bomb!" do nothing for me, unless I'm reading a review of a Rap CD.
Most importantly (and above all else), I look for reviews which are concise, relevant, well-researched, and thorough. A great review should give me a definitive reason(s) reason to (or not to) buy a product. ...Convince me. I admit that I'm sometimes a tough critic, but I do believe I am also a fair one. :-)I'll be readin' ya! ~Matt
