Epinions and My Daughter
My daughter definitely loves Epinions. She could take or leave Chuck Woolery and nonsequiturs, but she is surely a fan of Guinness and being tickled.
How I Rate
When rating reviews, I try to balance what I feel are two important goals of the site - namely, increasing the amount of quality content contributed for the consumer's benefit and encouraging new members to stick with it through the inevitable learning curve here. This isn't Amazon.com, rants.com, productdetails.com or (think books) spoilers.com. Epinions takes a slightly more sophisticated but ultimately consumer-centered approach to comparison shopping information. Our ratings impact the end user so I rate with that in mind. I don't expect professional reviews here. On the contrary, I yearn for meaningful user experience and insight reflected in your reviews.
If a rating I gave perplexes you, feel free to email me about it. I have a few pet peeves that may have resulted in a lower rating. They include divulging spoilers without warning, making it difficult for me to determine that you're actually reviewing the product in question, and not offering much user experience. I have others, but these are the big ones.
I highly recommend reading the reviews of the Top Reviewers and Leads in the appropriate category to get a sense of what works at Epinions. It's not about word count or following formulas. It's about sharing your experiences in detail with people who may know very little, if anything, about the product. If you'd like feedback on your reviews, send me a link or a draft in an email and I'd be happy to help you out.
I rate honestly, even if you're on my WOT. I expect and receive no less.
