Welcome.

Markham Shaw Pyle, JD, holds his undergraduate (double major, Politics [Special Honors] and Philosophy) and law degrees from Washington & Lee (where, in between bourbons, quail season, and poker games, he wrote op-ed columns, did the Big Band show, and got sent to the US Naval Academy Foreign Affairs Conference), and served with a total lack of distinction with the current Stonewall Brigade, 3/116 INF, 29th INF DVN (LT).

He is a member of the Society for Military History, the Organization of American Historians, the Southern Historical Association, the Southwestern Social Science Association, the Southwestern Historical Association, the Southwestern Political Science Association, the Virginia Historical Society, and the Texas State Historical Association.

Mr Pyle believes firmly in the 1928 BCP, the National League, and good biscuits. He is vehemently opposed to the Designated Hitter Rule, unnatural fibers, and beans in chili.

He is – thank God – an ex-lawyer, and is now an independent historian by night and a wage-slave by day.

He also composes music, including that on this page.

Most of his time is currently occupied by matters of filial duty.

Interests:

Mr Pyle is a military historian, fly-fisherman, wing-shot, the worst squash player in the history of W&L, and the worst rider ever to embarrass friends at the Rockbridge Hunt. On the other hand, he has his moments with baseball stats, the Stonewall Brigade, and the obscurer bits of Great War intel. He likes dogs and horses. People are a toss-up.

For those of you – impatient and impetuous souls – who Don’t Read Manuals or who refuse to eat anything that can’t be microwaved, here’s the quick, cut-to-the-chase version. By and large, I’m a book reviewer. Sometimes, I tackle games, sometimes travel, and sometimes music and the culture – or what’s left of it. In the olden days, I sometimes covered booze, too. Thusly:

Selected Readings: Some Book Reviews

Bloodless Victories, Tactics, and Strategy: the Games Reviews

Paths of Glory: Travel the Battlegrounds

Requiem for a Culture: the Music Reviews
