I am a hairdresser (and we all know your hairdresser can be a very opinionated person, and loves to talk about those opinions!). I've been on this site for many years, but it's been a few since I've visted, and a lot has changed. Much of the following I wrote years ago so I don't know if it's much of a problem anymore.
HOW I RATE
HIGHLY RECOMMEND- Some may think I give these out too easily, but I give them to people's whose opinions I trust, are clear, well-written, and to the point. A long review usually gets an HR, but if its long, and boring, and still doesn't offer me much to go on, I may not give it an HR. A short, flavorful, humorous review that gives me a good feel on the product review, also gets an HR.
RECOMMENDED- I give this rating if I think I understand what they're reviewing, although still have questions that need to be answered (which could have been answered if the reviewer followed the suggested guidelines where they post). Or I give this if I agree with most of what they're saying, but disagree with a few main points.
SOMEWHAT RECOMMENDED- I give this rating if the person gave me a little miniscule idea of what they are talking about, but really didn't put enough effort into the rating.I try to balance out this low rating, by finding another review by the writer that has more detail, or gives me more of an idea on the next item. If someone has mostly somewhat recommends, hopefully they can catch on by reading others that they are not putting as much effort into epinions as others are, and will try to improve, but sometimes people just don't want to catch on...
NOT RECOMMENDED- I give this when someone is blatantly abusing epinions, by repeating the same word to fill 100 words (padding), or using the forum to spew hatred or just using the forum for their amusement and joking around, or saying hi to their buds...all the while trying to rack up cents for what we work for. I also report these people for their abuses, and hope the NR convinces others to not visit their review. I also give NR's to those that just say "this is cool, I like it" without putting any thought into the fact that we may need to know something about the product they are reviewing. I feel that there isn't much effort into writing a review such as that, and hate to give NR's to those who made small percentage of effort, but it's just not enough. You don't need to be college educated to write a thorough and thoughtful review- you just need to follow the basic format, and give information on the product you are reviewing. ANY hate speech is automatic grounds for an NR from Nicky1970...because I think it is completely inappropriate (among other things). Again, I try to balance the NR for those that made some honest effort, and hope that they catch on that there is a difference between their NR and R ratings, and try to put more effort into their next review. (Except when NRing people abusing the system, or making racist,sexist,homophobic, sizeist, anti-semetic remarks).But, if all of their writing is so empty, I can't balance it, and don't review or visit their writings anymore.
Occasionally, I view a review and do not rate it. The times that I do this, I am biased against their opinion (for example, I hate the product they love,and don't think its fair for me to give a biased rating. Or, I am gay, and if someone offends me because they don't think their god likes it, thats their business, as long as it's not hate speech. But it's honestly too difficult for me to put my ego aside and fairly rate just the product epinion...so I don't bother...
I also occasionally remain hidden when giving an NR, and that is when the person is so immature and abusive to the epinions system, or hateful, that I fear because I have my email address listed (which I want it to be for constructive criticism) they will send me hate mail.
And my WEB OF TRUST contains the names of those whose opinions I respect repeatedly, and feel they are well worth the read, if not for the useful information, for the entertaining way they review.
Gee, this site is great for those of us who are talkers.
Also, reviews by people who just bought items, and haven't used them are worthless to me...
