About noisey
|
I've come across as pretentious to a lot of folks when it comes to music, and for the most part, I'm justified in it - or at least I feel I am.
I USED TO take my frustrations out on the multitudes of mindless customers at my place of employment, a nationwide retail music distributor based out of Torrance, CA, with over 500 stores and whose employees receive nothing but slave wages and are forced to wear aprons. I was bitter, I will not lie. But I quit that job!
As far as what I feel I'm qualified to write:
I try to keep up with the dance music scene, and stay versed in as many of the genres as I can. Of course I'm not going to be able to know every last detail about some freestyle song you heard back in a club in 1988 or have any idea what that song is they're playing on an ESPN aerobics show (I don't watch ESPN) - but I'll usually be able to figure it out.
I've done what I can to stay up to date with the British pop & "alternative" (I hate that word) scenes - as you'll see that most of my current reviews fit into that niche. I'm an avid reader of Q, and CMJ regularly rocks my socks.
And here comes the "I know too much about" - mid-to-late-80's/early-90's new-wave/post-modern/alternative. My old college radio show reflects this - as does my collection.
Music books I refer to when in need:
"Generation : Ecstasy" by Simon Reynolds Trouser Press Record Guide and TPRG to 90's Rock (even if they are really bitter reviews, it's a good reference book)
And because I suppose it's necessary these days, I give you ... The infamous How I Rate explanation:
Highly Recommended is warranted when a writer understands the product, and writes about it in a convincing manner. For example, in a music review, I expect to see bits about the songs, the mood generated by the album, and perhaps a little background information on the album itself - other albums that led up, the real-world situations surrounding the artist, or even a short blurb about the producer. If it's obvious that a writer has understood the material and has posted a review, fashioned in a clear, concise manner, they warrant an HR. I don't even have to agree with the review to give it an HR, just as long as it's well-written.
A Recommended from me signifies that I didn't gather as much from the author as I thought I needed. If some vital information is missing (but not too much), I rate with an R. In other cases, the review might be solid, but if it's laced with poor grammar or misspelled words, it warrants an R as well. It's not a bad rating.
Somewhat Recommended is for those who haven't quite gotten things down-pat in more than a few areas. If I find evidence of rampant grammatical or spelling errors, or just a weak grasp of the product, I bestow an SR.
The dreaded Not Recommended is reserved for the posts constructed so poorly that I can barely stomach. I choose to NR posts I find offensive, incomplete, off-topic, or otherwise horrid in multiple areas.
