About owlfan

I have been a college library worker, a college English teacher, a newspaper editor, and a proofreader of legal and technical material, so my passions naturally include reading, writing, and education in general. Some of my other passions -- such as cartoons, puns, superhero comics, and rock music -- may be less sophisticated, but they are part of what has made me the unique carbon-based lifeform I am today.
Rating philosophy: Love and Hate.
Some items in my "Love It!" list are the first in a series; in such cases, they may be considered representative of my opinion for the series as a whole. Any item on my "Love It!" list must meet at least one of the following criteria: (1) It must be something I consider timelessly classic, even if it is so ponderous in form that I wouldn't care to experience it repeatedly and often (e.g., a long novel or a really long movie); -- OR -- (2) it must be something that, regardless of intrinsic merit or lack thereof, I will go out of my way to experience again almost any time I encounter it (e.g., finding a favorite B-movie in progress just before I go to bed, and staying up to watch the latter half of it -- even though I've seen the whole thing 12 times or more). This does not necessarily mean that I would rate items in this latter category the BEST in their respective fields -- just that I enjoy them a lot. (Several items currently absent will be included when Epinions.com adds files about them, particularly certain books and albums.)
Conversely, anything included on my "Hate It!" list is something that I found to meet one of these descriptive criteria: (1) thoroughly unpleasant on a personal level, regardless of its so-called objective merits; -- OR -- (2) so bad by any measure that I found it disappointing and/or annoying. If I write an opinion rating it, I'll say which. Of course, this list is bound to stay relatively brief, since I don't tend to seek out that which I already know is neither of use to me nor of interest to me (e.g., I loathe sports, so I would hardly have occasion to rate hockey equipment or ESPN).
