Here's a little info on how I rate. Since my category is movies, I'll use that as the example, but I think you can extrapolate to other categories as well. I was originally going to make a whole essay of this, but that project has stalled. So I hope what's here helps...
I don't usually rate movies until I've seen them, and until I've written a review myself if that's my intention. That's why none of the Glory Road reviews have my mark yet; I haven't seen it yet.
Ratings specific info...
Helpful--The most common "anomaly" among reviews I rate is that I rate Helpful, while most others have doled out Very Helpful. Usually this is because the review is lacking something I feel necessary. Most frequently, it is all plot summary, with little or no opinion. That's useful, but not all that great. Think about it. If you ask a friend for an opinion on a movie, you don't want to just know what it's about, you want to know why he liked it. Same thing here. If I want a plot summary, I can find it dozens of other places. People come here for opinions, so provide them!
The other common omission is facts to back up those opinions. It's easy to say "Tom Hanks was great in Cast Away." Anyone who saw the movie, whether they liked it or not, will probably say that. Every single reviewer will mention that. Give me a reason, and something more than just "He was believeable." Most of them are; that's why they get paid. Tell me that you love the way he slowly absorbed the simplicities that surrounded him when he was reintroduced to the world. Tell me that you sensed the longing in his eyes when Helen Hunt opened that door. Tell me that. Don't just say he did a good job.
