Hi, I'm Paul! I am, as Bill Mason states in "Path of the Paddle," hopelessly addicted to canoeing. I canoe 12-months a year on every kind of water imaginable (or atleast water within a logical driving distance from home). I have had professional whitewater open canoe instruction at two of North America's top paddling schools. However, I greatly enjoy spending endless summer evenings working on my advanced flatwater (freestyle). I paddle regularly on many of West Michigan's finest canoeing streams with a disorganized but lovable band of avid canoeists affectionately known as the Rendez(Vous) Crew. I have canoed for 31 years of my 33 year life, however, I only 6 years ago learned how to properly propel a canoe with an accurate vertical paddle stroke. As you will find by reading my reviews, I like a canoe that tracks reasonably well when paddled flat, but will do a 180 with a single stationary draw when healed to the rail. Also I like to kneel while paddling a canoe (both high and normal). This to me is part of the definition of canoeing (ie: paddling an open boat with a single bladed paddle while kneeling). I like canoes that feel tippy when you sit on the seat, but feel lively and light on the water. Some of my favorite places to paddle, include BWCA, Algonquin, the Ottawa, Madawaska, Wolf and Agawa Rivers. My dream paddling destinations include the Alsek-Tatshenshini, Nahanni, and Moise. I live in Grand Haven, Michigan, and support my canoeing habit as a Project Manager/Hydrogeologist for an environmental company.
