I'm a finicky, very discriminating reviewer who, in a previous life, sold consumer electronics at a large retail establishment. I did it for the dough...but it was also kind of fun.
When I'm in the market for something (MP3 player, universal remote, whatever), I do a ton of research, learn my options, compare what's out there, and read all the other reviews on the web. Then I decide which features are most important to me. Generally, if no product fits my needs, I won't settle. I'll wait. That's why I didn't buy an MP3 player until 2004, digital camera until 2005, or a coffee maker until they did single-serving well.
As a result, I'm usually pretty happy with my purchases, so I tend to rate highly, although not always.
