Be honest and objective.

How you rate a person's epinion can definitely affect whether or not someone reads their epinions or not. This is a very useful feature here at epinions, but I think that quite a few people do not take it seriously.

Some people just give everyone a "highly recommended", and some don't agree with the epinion so they give it a "not recommended".

Rating Epinions
The real key in judging epinions is objectivity. It really shouldn't matter if you agree or disagree with a person's epinion or not. When I read epinions there are several factors i look at:

Does the author clearly rate the product?
Does the epinion sound contrived? or does it sound like a real experience?
Does the epinion contain useful facts about the product, including a description?
Does the epinion influence me one way or another concerning a product?
Did I learn something new when reading this epinion?

I don't base my rating on whether or not someone uses proper capitalization or punctuation. I rate by content.

I also do not rate someone poorly because I don't like their opinion on the product. I will however rate someone poorly if I feel that the epinion
doesn't tell me anything. There is nothing more annoying than reading an epinion that has a "highly recommended" rating and finding that the epinion says nothing at all.

While it would be nearly impossible to find the time to read every epinion by every member in here, I do try to return the favour of reading and rating at least some of the epinions of the people who have rated mine. I think this is only fair, however just because you gave me a good rating or a bad rating, don't expect the same from me. My rating for you will only be based on the content of that particular epinion.

If you receive a "not recommend" or even a "somewhat recommended" from me, you can expect that I will also leave a comment stating why I have rated you this way. I think that it's only fair to let you know why I have not given you a high rating. It also gives you a chance to edit your epinion if you see fit. If you have edited an epinion that I have poorly rated, feel free to email me and I will gladly read your epinion again!

Web of Trust
I am a bit selfish with giving out the trusted status. After all..who I trust is directly related to who I am. In order for me to add someone to my web of trust, I must see that they consistently write good reviews. Therefor, I may read someone's epinions for several months before I add them to my trusted list, unless of course the person is someone whom I know and trust already, which of course took longer than several months, I can assure you.

I don't expect everyone that I trust to have a perfectly written epinion every time, however, I will not add someone to my list who is inconsistent in their writings...I also won't add someone to my list just because they added me to theirs.

But, just because you're not on my list doesn't mean that you aren't going to be! I read epinions every day and I have several people who I am starting to trust. I hope that you will be one of them!
