The WOT And It's Influence On You

My understanding of the Web of Trust is still evolving, but here's what I've concluded so far.

The way I rate reviews will determine how those who trust me experience the site. That's obvious.

I usually won't rate below Recommended unless there is something seriously wrong with the review, such as it being very poorly written, or if it is obvious that the person just wants to make money.

Generally I rate Highly Recommended if the material is well presented and thorough, and Recommended if I feel that it was a good effort, but could have been a little better. I rarely give Somewhat Recommended, or Not Recommended, but I won't hesitate to NR someone who is obviously abusing the system.

I feel that when used correctly, the Web of Trust will help those who trust you to be able to see only well written opinions. Let's face it - most are good. But whenever someone gives a good rating to a review that is obviously written by someone who cares little more than making money from the site, it gives that person the opportunity to ruin our entire community.

As of this writing, I have 7 people who trust me. That's not a lot, but I respect each one, and keep them in mind whenever I rate. I know that what I rate highly will have a better chance of being seen by them. I also do my best to keep garbage from having the chance to appear before them. All that does is waste their time.

I originally had a lot more people on my Trust list until I recently trimmed it down, after reading some commentaries on here, and began to understand how the Web of Trust works. Now that I understand it, you can believe that only a few choice people are going to influence what I see on here.

I would highly recommend that you be very particular about who you trust. Don't trust someone just because they trust you. They might have different tastes than you do. Check out their profile first, and read their likes and dislikes, as well as at least some of their reviews - all if possible.

In short, know who it is that is influencing what you see on here, because otherwise you will find that you are wading through garbage that you don't care to see, and spending more time weeding out trash for your own trusted members.

By using the Web of Trust correctly, we can all help make the Epinions community a great place!
