My Ratings System - And some THANKS
Sep 21 '00 (Updated Oct 01 '00)
I have received a few e-mails from people wanting to know why I gave them an SR or NR on their reviews. I usually left a comment, but with Epinions little problems a little while ago I couldn’t leave my reasons. So here now is why you would get an SR or NR from me.
First off before I begin I want to thank a few people and let the newbies know who I think are the most helpful.
I_Culookn - Since day one she has checked out a lot of my reviews and supported me
Poseidon - Added me to his WOT when I was still new and answered a lot of my questions when he didn’t have to
VNDiscovery - This person spends a lot of time making sure that the newbies get exposure. He was the first person to trust me and he deserves a lot of credit.
There are of course many more people whom have helped me out, but I can’t possible list them all. If you are new and need help these are a few of the people who go above and beyond what is required of them.
A few quick notes
First off I NEVER rate anonomously, I always show who I am no matter what the rating.
Second if I do rate with either an SR or NR I try to write a comment. If there is no comment then please feel free to e-mail me to ask.
My Ratings System
Now on to bigger and better things;
When I am checking out the “Just In” section I am mainly attracted to Movie and Book reviews. I do read other things, but those are the two that get my priority.
What will get an SR or NR right away is if you tell everyone how much you hated the book or movie, or how much it bored you, but you don’t say why. People have different tastes and what bores you might be interesting to someone else.
The next problem is when someone selects the “this movie reviews none (or minor) plot details” just before they post a review that gives away the ending or certain surprises that normally would give the person watching the movie a little more enjoyment.
Major Plot Detail - Don’t read unless you want the end to The Shawshank Redemption to be spoiled on you.
I just read a review on The Shawshank Redemption and right at the end of the review the person wrote and I quote “Oh, and don’t worry when he is getting the rope it’s not to kill himself he’s using it to escape out a hole he has been digging since he got the rock hammer.”
End of Major Plot Detail
Arrrrrrgggghhhhhh, that just ruined the entire surprise for anyone who hasn’t seen that movie. See what I did in BOLD letters above? That’s what you need to do if you are giving away a major plot detail when no one expects it.
Some people want to know the endings or surprises, but when you select “minor plot details” instead of “major plot details” I can’t recommend that people see it. I will leave a reason why and I will check to see if it gets changed. If it does I change my ratings accordingly.
One of the major things that will get an NR from me is when you just copy your review from somewhere else. It’s not hard to find those reviews, and even if I find it later I will go back and re-rate it.
On other product reviews the one thing that will get an SR or NR on your review is if you lie about a product. If you are reviewing say the new Voodoo 6 (which isn’t even out yet) you had better prove that you are one of the people designing it or myself and everyone else will be a bit doubtful of your review.
Yet another thing is when people review products or services that they have never used before. I have seen a lot of car reviews lately that mainly consist of…
“This car stinks, it is ugly and it is for old fogeys, I would never drive one of those things.”
How does that help the consumer? I can tell what it looks like by driving by the dealership, not to mention that people have differing tastes. I want to know how it drives, handles, brakes, etc.
I hope this clears up a few things about how I rate. I think I rate pretty fairly and I have only had a few people question why I gave them such a bad rating. I have also gone back and re-rated quite a few things after people have e-mailed me and told me they fixed something.
