Writing Movie ReviewsJul 21 '00 Write an essay on this topic.Just recently, I wrote a few movie reviews. One was on The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, another on Evil Dead, and one more on Twister. Both of them were short, capsule reviews and, I thought, very good. But I was the only one to have such a high opinion about my own work. Both times I was criticized for not providing enough information, specifically information about plot, character, story, etc. But, plot, story, character are summed up by Epinions themselves in each pertinent movie category. What I don't understand is why people 1) Want me to reword Epinion's synopsis and insert it into my review and 2) Want me to reveal major plot and story points Really now, is that what a movie review is supposed to be? Remember in school how the teacher would say, "I want a book report, not a summary"? I wrote those reviews for someone who hadn't seen the particular flick, but was cinematically literate. I compared the film at hand to other films that were very popular and likely to have been seen by most audiences. Now, nobody wants to feel bad about SRing or NRing someone's stuff (and it seems many of you feel compelled to meet quotas nowadays) but leaving a nonsensical comment about why you gave a low rating makes me feel worse. I don't mind a bad rating, but the comments are really irritating me. I feel like my review wasn't even read by the posters. I feel like you're trying to manufacture an explanation for your low rating. |
