Why did you rate me like that?

Apr 28 '00

I am starting to get a pet peeve with this whole ratings system, and it has somewhat to do with those who are doing the rating. There are a couple of things that I wish that those reading and rating opinions would do: If you have to leave an NR rating, leave a comment as to why, or leave a way for the author to contact you.

The worst thing that I see is that I see epinions posted from time to time that look like they should have HR ratings, and do, but there's a lingering NR rating down at the bottom. I check over to the comments section, and there is nothing there. Worse yet, some of these people that are rating others as NR, are doing it anonymously. In a way, I can see why some people might do this. Perhaps it would happen if the person writing the opinion showed a display of outright immaturity and it seemed that the reader might receive a great deal of backlash for giving their rating.

The one time an NR rating happened to me, my heart sank. How could they do that to me? I thought my epinion was great! I only hand out NR ratings when the epinion is just fluff or has nothing to do with the topic they are writing about. I thought that my epinion was properly placed, and I didn't insert any junk into it. I waited and waited for a comment to appear, but it did not. Luckily, they didn't do rate it anonymously. I could act on this in a professional, mature manner.

The first thing I did was to check out the profile of the person to make sure that she wasn't the type to just randomly hand out NR's at random. She did have a long string of epinions that she had written, that were all rated HR. From that, I could tell that she probably knew her way around here and how to write well and respect others. Have I rated any of her epinions? Did I give a fair rating to her writing as well? She didn't look too familiar to me, so I sent her an email, politely asking how I could do better next time with my epinion. After I hit 'send', I sat back in total wonder, not knowing how this person would respond, if at all. Would she be offended that I sent her an email? Would she yell at me for questioning their rating?

The next morning, I got a pleasant, thoughtful email from the person who gave me NR, saying that she felt in retrospect that maybe it should have been an SR rating instead, and then listed the ways that I could have made my epinion better. I plan to go edit that epinion as soon as I get a chance.

It wasn't all that hard! I just wish that she had dropped a comment in the comments section immediately when she gave me an NR, that way I could better understand where I'd gone wrong. I hope that everyone can learn to do this, so that the Epinions community can grow.
