How I Rate EpinionsApr 16 '00 Write an essay on this topic. In my relatively short time on Epinions I have read and rated many opinions; I'm usually here reading for at least a couple of hours a day and sometimes more. At first I didn't rate them because I wasn't sure how to rate, but over time I have developed a system that works for me. I don't rate anonymously and I rate on the quality of the opinion, regardless of whether or not I agree. If you write an excellent opinion on why AOL is the best ISP in the universe I will not agree with you and I may even leave a comment to that effect but you will get an HR from me anyway. Additionally I neither read nor rate recipes. I do not participate in retaliatory rating; if someone happens to rate one of my reviews poorly and I read one of their reviews and think it is excellent they will still get an HR from me. Epinions that I Highly Recommend are just that; a review that I would strongly suggest that people read before making a purchasing decision. I expect to see both positive and negative aspects of a product outlined (if your pros and cons are "everything" and "nothing" you will likely not get an HR from me because it looks like you haven't put very much thought into your review). I want to see details, and lots of them. I tend to look on long reviews with more favor because I haven't seen a review yet that could answer all of my potential questions in one paragraph. I don't have any set "length" requirement though. If I am going to highly recommend a review I expect some thought to have gone into the presentation, with good grammar and spelling and white space between the paragraphs so that I can read it. Relative terms like "cheap" and "expensive" should be quantified; what is "cheap" in New York City may be quite expensive in say Boise. Recommend is not a bad rating; it means just that, that I recommend it. This would be a review that I'd tell people to check out if they had some time before making a purchasing decision. I give this rating out the most; if you give some useful information but don't tell me everything I need to know or there are several grammatical or spelling errors you'll probably get this rating. Somewhat recommend is given to opinions that contain numerous grammatical or spelling errors or that leave me with many many questions. An example would be reviews that basically say you like or hate the product but don't give a very clear explanation as to why, a review with nothing capitalized, or one that is one long run on sentence. I generally leave comments as to why I left this rating. Not recommended is reserved for reviews that are meant to abuse the system - one word repeated over and over, referral ids in pay to surf reviews, reviews in which high ratings are requested. Reviews that contain foul language or that bash any racial/ethnic/lifestyle group also get this rating from me. I'm always happy to come back and take another look at your reviews if you edit them and email me and let me know. |
