Why I'M here

The Bottom Line Read the Review
** Updated 3/3/01 ** - I made some updates to this epinion and added a few things I forgot about. No changes were made to the existing text.
I received a somewhat nasty letter yesterday that has prompted me to write up this editorial. Here is an excerpt from that e-mail.
”I just visited your profile and read that you worked for a local paper reviewing movies and books. I just want to know if you do indeed work for a paper doing new movie reviews WHY DON’T YOU REVIEW NEW MOVIES!”
There was more to the message, but I saw little point in posting it. I just want to let everyone know what you can expect to see from me.
I could review things that I have just seen and already written about in the paper such as, The Patriot, Me, Myself & Irene, The X-Men, etc., but I won’t and I will tell you why.
From browsing each of these subjects I have noticed that the second a movie comes out tons of reviews are written about it. I can’t see writing up a review about something that already has tons of great reviews written about it. The only time I would do this is if I had something new and unique to add. And unless it was something major I would just leave a comment about it on someone else review. The only motivation I would have to writing up yet another hit movie review would be money. And if the only reason for writing reviews here were money well lets face it I (and a lot of other people) wouldn’t be here. Earning .01 cent per visit isn’t exactly paying for my yacht (if I had one).
My mission here at Epinions is to open people’s eyes to movies and books that you may not have read, seen or even heard about before. I am going to do reviews of not so well known authors, and non-blockbuster movies. So if you read my profile and see that I review movies for a paper please don’t think to yourself that I will be reviewing all the hit movies here. I do it for the paper because I am the only one who does. Here however you have 50 some odd opinions to choose from so there is no point in me competing with that. Especially when there are so many great opinions already that describe every aspect of the movie.
I also feel it may be a conflict of interest for me to write movie reviews on Epinions when I also write them for the paper. I can however do reviews on older movies that I will not be doing for the paper.
Already 2 of my book reviews and a couple of my movie reviews were the first to be posted even though the book/move has been out for years. That’s the way I want to do it, educate people about a great movie/book that they may have missed along the way.
This isn’t to say that I won’t write up reviews on a hit movie or N.Y. Times bestseller. I do have a few favorites that I want to share with people. I just won’t be reviewing every new movie that comes out.
On a side note I have noticed something slightly humorous. How is it that some people post reviews of movies when the movie isn’t even out yet? I saw a posting of X-men, I believe, and it was posted 4 days before the movie was released. Just curious how you saw it before anyone else in the nation. I guess you were sitting in with Roger Ebert when he saw it. I realize I am not the only one that has the ability to see screenings, but the movie review I mentioned was actually wrong with many aspects of the movie, and was obviously just written from what the person had seen on the commercials.
I hope this clears up a few things about what I am here to do.
