Number One (Reply to this comment)

I'm sticking with Number One, a creative outlet for writer. A wanna-be writer, I've found this site to be helpful in writing about the things I want to write about. Well, some at least. I'm glad you're staying around!

More like $0.06 per hour (Reply to this comment)
by michiman1
I can't come up with a figure anywhere near $0.60 but that's ok. I am sure not in this for the money, that'll be a bonus. It's just kind of interesting receiving responses from others and having my own self updating copy of "Consumer's Report"

What, I can get money for this? Cool!
Every writer really wants people to read his/her stuff. Getting paid is nice, too, but not the point if you are really a writer. Thanks for telling people.

I used to PAY to do what I'm getting paid to do here. (Reply to this comment)
by jgibson2
Yep, I had an account on Genie, then on Compu$erve. I paid a monthly fee for the privilege of expounding on a variety of subjects. HERE I'm going to have my second phone line and ISP paid for by my efforts. NOPE, I'm not going to get rich, but it's nice to have an addiction that pays for itself.

Who said I was opinionated??? (Reply to this comment)
by isinga
The mere fact that I have an opinion on almost everything that comes down the pike doesn't necessarily mean I'm opinionated. The mere fact that people on the street start running away when they see me coming doesn't necessarily mean I'm opinionated. I just like to express myself -- that's all.
Although the money is nice, it's being able to tell other people what I think that really matters. The world warms to love, cringes at hate, and thrives on communicaion. Lovers need to reaffirm each other, children need to be encouraged for doing well and warned of danger, and average people -- like me -- need to be able to recognize each other with some form of communication.
Even if the money stops, I'll still be here. I've been writing for others to read ever since I was ten years old, and have edited six newspapers in my journalism career, and your work is great. Keep it up.

For taking the time to figure this up for us... I can't imagine doing anything else for such a low monetary rate of return...but, I'd do this for free! :)

who does this for the money? I'm about to enter a profession that bills folks $200+ an hour for my services. 60 cents is not a wise economical alternative!
Clearly, I do this because I love it and it gives me a great forum to share my opinions and improve my writing skills.
great review as always,

A Dollar an Hour (Reply to this comment)
by Hard_To_Please
Ever since I was "shocked and dismayed" at the Income Share deposited into my account, I have been waiting for someone to write the definitive review of the whole Epinion's experience. Silly me- I should have known to just come to pogomom's page and know that the definitive review would be found here!
I'm glad I didn't write about this myself because I would have missed the mark completely when compared to your comprehensive overview.
While the math you prescribed for us requires several approximations, I figure that I make about a dollar an hour. Would I do anything else for such a paltry wage? No way! Will I continue to 'work ' at Epinions for the same wage? You bet!...Mark

I enjoyed reading your review. I am one of the few (or it seems) happy with Epinions etc. I think it is great that we receive compensation for our writing.
I also JUST like to be able to read and rate reviews/editorials too. I think it is a NEAT site.

The Gospel According to Pogomom (Reply to this comment)
by Grouch
Thanks for putting this into perspective so beautifully. This was a terrific tribute to the site and its benefits.
Like many others, my enthusiasm was dampened slightly when I woke up in the cold light of the "morning after." But I tried to put things in perspective like you did (albeit, sans calculator) and I realized that, yes, my love for Epinions.com runs much, much deeper than filthy lucre.
I feel I've been blessed to be part of this community with wonderful and thoughtful members like you, pogomom.

Excellent review (Reply to this comment)
by moonmoods_52
I am not happy with the pay compared to what they use to pay. If I had a job outside of what I make on the internet, I probably would be less annoyed by this. Being a handicapped person I am less inclined to be content with this lowered pay, but then again, Epinions.com doesn't "owe" me anything and I am still willing to write, read and rate reviews. It is just done with less enthusiasm. Nonetheless, I think you wrote a marvelous review on the matter.
Ciao.

I hereby relinquish my throne as the Queen of Optimism. You are more more deserving! Leave it to you to not only look at the bright side, but drag us all over to the window to see it too.
Dollars and cents aside, I do believe alot of people are feeling down because of the way the reviews showed them (and me) to only be in the top 100%, but when I consider the quality and character of the people there with me, it's not so bad after all. :) The examples of "low end" reviews that were said would garner .20 made people whose review didn't get anything feel like they were saying that their review was a lesser one than the example (which kind of well...sucked) Your mathmatical equation is sheer genious! But its tough to use it if we got $0.00. On the UP side: I understand that the share bonuses continue to accrue every month thoughout the year so they could do better next time, as we continue to write more that may do better too.

Nothing has changed for me, either (Reply to this comment)
by tanster
"If, like me, you get a kick out of writing reviews with the knowledge someone will actually read what you write and possibly benefit from your experiences, you might think otherwise."
That pretty much sums it up. My passion (or obsession) for Epinions has never been about the money, but about how my reviews affect a consumer's purchasing decision. Were you on the fence about purchasing a product, but then my review convinced you to definitely do so? Or did my review help prevent you from making a purchasing mistake? Either way, that's the reward.
Thanks, pogomom, for putting it into words so eloquently. I'm with ya 100% percent!

"All good things..." (Reply to this comment)
by Chuck_Hansen
The old bonus program was great while it lasted, but ultimately it spawned a whole stratum of users who saw Epinions as nothing more than a cash cow to be milked for all it was worth. For a little while the cash bug bit me too, and I obsessed over my royaltiy totals, watching them inch their way upwards. It wasn't long before I realized that focusing on the royalties leeched the fun right out of the Epinions experience. Once I learned to ignore that dollar sign, I found that in the end, Epinions is a great place to be even without the cash. Hopefully, after the initial sting wears off for those who are smarting, they will realize this too.
When I think of all the great reviews I've read, the fun and funny people I've met, the debates, speculation, and yes, even arguments that the off-site Epinions boards have generated, I can honestly say that these things are more valuable than the royalty checks.

Oh Helen, (Reply to this comment)

for a minute there, and especially from your title I thought you were throwing in the towel. Whew!! Glad you're not! I too get a kick out of writing reviews and actually having people rate them and leave comments sometimes. I still can't get over that! Not only that, I've learned so much about products, computers, and just what a great community this place is. After finding epinions, I would be bored silly to venture out there in cyberspace. Believe me, I've tried it recently and I feel like I'm lost in space when I do, so I always come back 'home so so speak. Great words on the subject Helen.

I personally was shocked at my so-called "value" to Epinions..... (Reply to this comment)
by Jannie0
...considering my income share royalty check was in three digits to my surprise.....
But I would stay regardless, the friendship and fun here at Epinions is a reward in itself.....the money is just a bonus....although I originally wanted to (at least) pay for my ISP fee every month, in which I did and have.......but now am able to lay a new ceramic tile floor in my kitchen and laundry room!
What more can a woman ask for?
Great review (as always!).....

It is more than money for me too . . . the camaraderie, emotional support, and virtual friendships that I have experienced here make it so worthwhile. Perhaps someday, when Epinions have added a category on personal experiences with retirement homes, we can take over a virtual wing and write on our experiences with wrinkle creams, analgesic rubs, and wheelchairs (mine's gonna rock). I just hope they allow pets.

Kudos to you for staying....I never was in it for the money...it IS just the icing on the cake....
Since I am so opinionated (yes, people want to stuff a pillow in my mouth when the tv is turned on, sometimes..!!) and I enjoy writing, I choose to stay..just as I chose to come here in the first place.
The extra petty cash I do get will pay for my ISP, and maybe a few odds and ends I buy for my computer (those money sucking piggies that they are!!). I never planned to make a living doing this! If I wanted to do that, I'd work for Consumer Reports or become the next Siskel and Ebert.

... YES! I was!
I have NEVER seen so many people running around like chickens with their heads cut off!!!!
Could someone tell me how many died, where the plane crashed, when the market crashed, what the aliens that landed from Star K688RZ will do to us????
Quick, if I get a TV crew in here quick, I can set up a three part documentary and have advertisers lined up all the way from here to Ulan Bator!!!
That's my idea! No one try to steal it! ...t
