You gave me a what!Oct 31 '00 (Updated Nov 04 '00) Write an essay on this topic. This being my 100th opinion, I thought it would be appropriate to help the newer members by giving them some insight as to how I feel you should rate. This may not necessarily be the way that other members rate the opinions they read but it is my way and I do feel that I rate fairly! I want to first start by telling you about the different ratings and what it takes to get them from me then I'll give you what I consider to be some things you shouldn't do! Highly Recommended This being the highest rating that you can get, your opinion should give me enough information so that when I read it, I'm not left with any questions about the product, place or service! When I give this rating, it means I'm able to form my own opinion and I'm not left wondering what you're talking about. Length is not that important to me because if you indeed know enough about what you're writing about, your opinion will be long enough. There should be very few, if any, spelling errors in it as they give you the opportunity to correct any words that are misspelled before submitting your review. Recommended Getting this rating from me means that you've written a good opinion but left me with some questions about what you were writing about! Too often when I read someone's review, I get the impression that they know what they're talking about but rushed through it, leaving some important details out. We're all guilty of this, myself included and it's usually because we assume that if we know all about it then other people do as well. Another way to get this kind of rating from me is having numerous spelling errors in your review and although some may find this petty, I don't because they give you that option when you preview what you wrote. Somewhat Recommended If you receive this rating from me, it could be for a variety of reasons but I always try to leave a comment as to why I rated your opinion as such. If you decide to redo it, please let me know and I'll give it a second look and if it merits it, I'll change my rating! I hate giving out poor ratings and since I don't revenge rate anyone, it means that I felt you honestly deserved it. As I previously stated, I do try to leave a comment but only if my comment will not be stating the obvious. If, after reading your review, I'm left totally puzzled as to what you're talking about, you'll more than likely get this type of rating from me. Not Recommended I rarely give this one out but if I do, and you value my opinion, I would suggest that you delete it and start over! I'm a pretty easy person to please so if you get this rating, you know that it's really bad! Some possible reasons for receiving this rating from me would be things like excessive profanity, total lack of knowledge about what you're writing about or just so offensive that it thoroughly disgusts me! Also, if you plagiarize, you'll not only get this rating but I'll be letting Epinions know about it as well. The following is a brief list of what I consider what not to do when reading and rating other people's opinions: 1. Don't rate the opinion based on your own thoughts or opinion concerning what they're writing about! You should be rating the review based on overall content and not on whether you agree or disagree with them. If you disagree with what they say, write your own opinion rather than rate someone poorly because of your own personal feelings. 2. Don't give someone a higher rating than you feel they deserve just because you know the person! Too many times I see people getting a higher rating that they actually deserve and I'm left wondering why. Now, I can't speak for everyone else but I want honest ratings because if I write a bad review then I want to know about it so I can do better next time or even correct the problem by editing my review. 3. Don't give someone a poor rating just because you want to improve your status here at Epinions! I'd love nothing better than to become an expert or a most popular reviewer but I probably never will because I refuse to rate someone poorly just to get there. I don't believe in stepping on people just to get to the top and I think that no one should be asked to do this just to improve their status. 4. Don't just rate the review based on length without even reading it with the hopes of getting on someone's Web of Trust! I seen one review in recent weeks that was highly recommended by at least three people and all the writer did to get this rating was to write the same five or six lines over and over and over again. I, for one, don't put people on my Web of Trust just because they rated me highly or because they were one of the first five people to rate me. 5. Don't rate a person poorly just because they rated one of your reviews like that! This is commonly known as revenge rating and, in my opinion, is totally unacceptable. If you got a bad rating from someone and it's really bothering you then try to find out why they rated you that way. Giving them a bad rating just because they gave you one is not the way to handle things. 6. Don't rate anonymously just because you felt that the review was bad and had to give it a poor rating! I've seen this too many times when a person gives a bad rating but refuses to let you know who they are. The most obvious reason for doing this is because you're worried about someone getting mad at you but if you rated fairly, no one should be upset by it. The other possible reason for not showing who you are is because you know that it deserves a better rating but you're trying to improve your status here and someone has to get the bad ratings. These are just a few of what I consider no-no's when reading and rating reviews but, as always, this is only my opinion and it may not be how other people feel. I tried to cover what I thought was the most important ones for you to consider when rating others so I hope it helps you. Very few of us can say that we're great writers and I certainly don't claim to be one so if, for some reason, you rate someone's opinion badly, please let them know why by either posting a comment or sending an e-mail to that person! Most people strive to having all their reviews rated as highly recommended so if one falls short of the mark, let them know so they can try to improve it or, at least, do better on the next one. |
