STOP! Do you believe all that is written.

All of us that read opinions do so to gain knowledge. But the big question is, is the knowledge that we are gaining correct?

I use Epinions to find out if movies that I want to see are worth the price. I read to see what other members think of a book that I am thinking about reading. When it comes time to buy a new air conditioner, I will read what members of Epinions have to say.

So where is the problem.

Today I read an opinion on treatment of a certain medical condition. I work in the medical field and have a good working understanding of the condition he was talking about. The problem lies in the fact that what he was stating was wrong. In fact, the treatment he was recommending would be highly detrimental to the condition at hand and would severely setback the healing process. I only hope that people reading that review would do research on their own first, and consult a physician before accepting the recommendation.

I tend to write reviews on first aid, and some on over the counter medications. But I write about what I know. If I am at all unsure of what I am stating, I research it first. When writing anything dealing with peoples health, I always follow it up with consult with your physician. Everyone is different, and treatments and medications will vary from person to person.

How do we know who's opinions to trust?

When I read the opinion of a writer I do not know, I go and read their profile page. What do they do for a living? If I want advice on what components to put into my computer, I look for someone who works in the computer field. If its buying a new toy for the children, writers with children are usually your best bet.

Bottom line.

If you are looking for medical advice, reading opinions can offer you a lot of different perspectives. Opinions on over the counter medications I find to be very helpful. But, for more serious conditions, always consult your physician before trying remedies learned by reading opinions. They can be helpful, and they can be deadly.
