Hey hey! (Reply to this comment)
by JDinPA
I do believe I was the 2nd one in to review your "short" review -- the first person had given you a VH, I gave you the 1st Helpful -- I was kind of shocked to see the review end so quickly! lol Now I see it was a "test" ~
I know that it is easy to just rate what others have rated, but I do try to be fair. It is much harder to give a helpful to an advisor or top reviewer, but I have stuck my neck out and gone against the grain numerous times when there were loads of VH's (by other advisors too) and I'd toss in a Helpful. ~~~~~~~~
I rate electronics harder than I would rate some other subjects, but I feel that I put effort into my reviews and try to hold myself to my own standards across the board. I have noticed a huge trend where I really do not believe many leads/advisors/reviewers in a couple areas deserve the VH's they get, but because of their readership/friendships they get them. It does bug me, but who am I to disrupt the scads of VH's in an area where I am not an advisor -- maybe they know something I do not???? lol
Anyway, thanks for the comment. In case you never return to this review, I'm sending on to your e-mail ~ Thanks again and have a great weekend. Judy

There is a trend in the community that is starting to shift to less lengthy reviews. I've been trying that out, but seems that most readers just scan at how long the review is then rate on just that, and then all others follow the initial rating (for example, if the first review was rated "H", the rest will follow).
I've proven this with several reviews - a deliberate short one that I will honestly expect an "H", then revised it quickly with one that is much more in depth right after the initial H rating. Then what follow is more H ratings.
I also get comments that makes it even more obvious the reader didn't actually read my review. At best effort, they may have just scanned it. For example, with external drives, I always test the product as is. Then I take it apart to see how easy it is to upgrade the drive. Even before I did that, I informed the readers that the product just died. When I tried to get inside to see if I could replace the hard drive (to see how easy it would be to upgrade), I found that I could not unless I want to permanently break the enclosure (rendering it useless). Instead I decided to return the drive.
So I got this reader who rated it NH and commented "you took the drive apart and was surprised it died?" Makes me wonder if anyone actually reads anymore.

BRAVO! (Reply to this comment)

'Nuff said.
I am sometimes accused of being too verbose, but at least I talk about my likes/dislikes instead of just spouting off from the dust jacket or video sleeve. (You know who you are....)
Great editorial, Judy, keep up the good work.

I'm still getting my feet wet, so to speak, in the Epinions community, and you offered some fantastic advice to help out "newbies" such as myself. Thanks for such an insightful posting.

Raise the Minimum Word Quota! (Reply to this comment)

I know that many argue that very short reviews are best because that shows the writer knows how to be concise, but I disagree.
I am also disappointed when the title leads me to believe I'm about to learn alot or be entertained and find one little paragraph which barely whets my appetite.
I'm not advocating that everyone write long reviews just for the sake of more words and certainly don't expect others to ramble on like I do (I average 1000 words per review), but let's at least show that a bit more effort was put into creating an epinion!...Mark

tis true, but I purposely put it under the "Don't Do," as I wanted to deal with a negative category in a positive light. Thanks for reading and leaving a comment. Judy

Oops. If you happened to click on my name, you would see this is not me. I accidentally forgot to change my husband's log-in screen.

This could fall under is What to do when writing your review. They have one for what to do and what not to do.
