I am 28 years old and live in Grantham, UK with my husband (and two cats). We visited Toronto in 1996, as a one-off treat after an inheritance, but were totally hooked on the country and so have visited every year since. Our first trip included a stay at the Royal York Hotel and that set the scene for all our future visits, where we have only every stayed at Canadian Pacific/Fairmont hotels. We also travel to places other than Canada, including various US and European cities.
I am also determined to find a good UK hotel chain that I can give positive reviews of, such as I do with Fairmont - that is my holy grail! Up to now I am constantly underwhelmed by the standards here. I am looking forward to reviewing a couple of Dubai hotels that I am visiting next January.
A lot of trips here in the UK are based around finding good restaurants, which involve a lot of effort, as we live in the middle of nowhere (read: cultural desert!). Just for the hell of it, here are my very favourite restaurants anywhere(this week):-
Jump, Toronto, Canada;
Canoe, Toronto, Canada;
Seafood Restaurant, Padstow, UK;
King Sitric, Howth, Ireland;
Rimrock Cafe, Whistler, Canada;
Newtown, Montreal, Canada;
Whitstable Oyster Fishery, Whitstable, UK;
Chin Chin, New York, USA;
Grand Central Oyster Bar, New York, USA;
Pescatores, Victoria, Canada;
QV2, Dublin, Ireland;
Edith Cavell, Jasper Park Lodge, Canada;
Wild Ginger, Seattle, USA;
Kuletos, San Francisco, USA;
Yo! Sushi, London and elsewhere, UK;
Fish!, London and elsewhere, UK;
Wetherspoons, all over the UK;
I used to work for Capital One Bank here in the UK, but I have resisted the temptation to get started on a review of them - it wouldn't be very complimentary! I am now studying for a degree part time, and gradually getting over my Capital One experiences.
I love stand up comedy and recommend the Edinburgh Fringe. My favourite comedians who no-one has probably heard of are Lee and Herring, Daniel Kitson, Ross Noble, Noel Fielding and in particular Dave Gorman.
My music tastes are strongly influenced by my trips to Canada. My favourite bands/artists include REM, Our Lady Peace, Fun Lovin Criminals, David Usher, Barenaked Ladies, The Divine Comedy, Foo Fighters, Nirvana and Alanis Morissette.
My favourite book is Nineteen Eighty Four, by George Orwell who is one of my favourite authors, along with various classic authors such as George Eliot and Thomas Hardy. I also enjoy slightly more modern 'classics' by Jack Kerouac and Ken Kesey, as well as Nick Hornby's books.
Well that's me .......
