A Generic Sort Of Biography
I was born in 1963 in East Africa, while my father participated in a teaching program in Tanganyika. After returning to the United States later that same year, I have spent most of my life in Maryland. In 1985, I graduated from Towson University, completing a Bachelor’s Degree in English, with a concentration in Writing.
Following college, I tried my hand at a number of interesting vocations, never quite finding a creative niche for my interests in Writing. Some of my jobs have included, Banquet Manager, Carpenter, Gardener, Courier and Title Abstractor. While these positions did not always offer a creative outlet, I have found that all of life’s experiences eventually come in handy, whether in raising a child, advising a friend or writing a story.
In 1986, I married the girlfriend I had met at Towson. Our first child was born in 1992, followed by our second in 1994, and third in 1996. It was also in 1996 that we bought our first home, a large rambling Victorian in the small town of Sudlersville. By the fall of 1996, we had made an important decision – I would stay home with the children, eliminating our need for daycare outside the home.
In addition to my many parenting responsibilities, I have a very busy lifestyle. To supplement our family income, I work part-time at Holly’s Restaurant, a family establishment on the Eastern Shore. In 1998, I began my own used book business, Under Toad Books, seeking out and selling quality used books to friends and family and many Internet acquaintances. I have also been in martial arts training for several years, with a black belt as my eventual goal.
I have been writing off and on since my college years, but only recently have I felt old enough and opinionated enough to express myself in a meaningful way! I have written short fiction and poetry, and currently have an interest in juvenile fiction, which I hope to develop further. I am an annual participant in the Queen Anne’s County Arts Council poetry contest, and used to write a weekly music review for a local newspaper. I also very much enjoy serving as a volunteer in the media center at the Sudlersville Elementary School a few hours a week, in addition to staying involved in my children’s class rooms.
