About tat8er
My favorite possession is my passport, and airports turn me on. Travel is my mental health insurance. I travel on a shoestring. At one time I rued not having the disposible income to travel first class, but now, as a "seasoned" traveler, I am a zealot for spending less and seeing more. A friend once said "I go on trips, you go on adventures." Living lower on the tourist food chain one is not insulated from the local environment. I prefer self-catering accommodations where I do my own cooking to a hotel with room service. Shopping in foreign markets is a wonderful way to gain a sense of place; "the differences are in the details." And, its the mundane tasks of everday life -- shopping for groceries, cooking, doing laundry, taking local transportation -- that make me feel that I have "lived" everywhere I've traveled. I've stayed in condos, holiday cottages, private homes, hostels and convents. I spent a month traveling across Europe by train with my daughter (who was 8) using a backpack tent and local campings. How else can you stay in Vienna for $10 a night? When I'm not on the road I work in maternal child health, and have an avocation in genealogy and history. I'm an avid photographer and writer. I have five cats (Norwegian Forest, American Wirehair, and two moggies), an Italian Greyhound, a starling (who we rescued over a decade ago), and enough dust bunnies to weave a few large tapestries.
