About tlbwriter

Tlbwriter's Profile
I'm a hard-core shopper. My husband jokes (and sometimes complains) about my need to research and comparison-shop for every big purchase (and many medium-sized ones), but it means we end up with a good product at a good price.

As a parent, I find that many of my reviews fall into the Kids and Family category. And since I became a parent the hard way, I also have some editorials related to infertility. However, my reviews are not limited to "kid stuff." Please take a look:

See my reviews by category:
Car Seats Strollers Toys, Kids' Books, and Videos Other Baby Gear Pregnancy
Infertility Health and Beauty Books, Movies, and Television Internet Sites & Services Home and Pets
Other Reviews (cars, electronics, and everything that doesn't fit somewhere else)

If you're wondering what criteria I used when I rated your review, please read my ""How I Rate" editorial.

You may wonder why I have not added many people to my Web of Trust. One reason I'm extra-picky about that is because trusting someone means, in effect, that you agree with their ratings. There are some writers who I enjoy, but they rate more liberally than I do, so I find that I don't feel comfortable adding all of my favorite writers. In other words, I'm a big meanie. But the biggest reason I'm building my WOT so slowly is because I don't want to trust someone unless I've read all of their reviews, and I just haven't had time to do that lately. I can't even keep up with those who are already on my list (and they're all outstanding -- if you haven't already checked them out, I encourage you to do so... after you read my reviews, of course. ;-> ) I hope to be able to spend more time reading my favorites (and finding new favorites) soon, and hopefully adding to my WOT.

Thanks for reading!

Britax Marathon - More than the Roundabout, less than the Roundabout
The Marathon has some pretty big shoes to fill, and for the most part it fills them well. Which is a good thing, since it's the only seat on the market today that meets the needs of some parents.

Britax Roundabout - It doesn't get any better than this
Some people think those of us who love the Roundabout are swayed by its elite image. I was swayed by car seat techs who routinely pick the Roundabout as their favorite. Find out why they recommend it.

Cosco Grand Explorer - There is no reason to buy this seat
And there are lots of good reasons to avoid it like the plague. Find out why this seat is unsafe.

Eddie Bauer Auto Booster - Why pay more for less safety?
A more expensive version of the dangerous Grand Explorer. Here's why you should avoid it.

Strollers

Return to categories

Combi Savvy Z ? Expensive, but probably worth it
Of course you would never buy a stroller just because complete strangers stop you on the street to tell you how cool it is... or would you?

Kolcraft Reclining Umbrella Stroller - wonderful umbrella stroller, but not as my only stroller
It's a really nice umbrella stroller, but it's not going to take the place of your "big stroller."

Cosco Rock N Roller - Almost, but not quite, the stroller of my dreams
I really loved it until I tried to live with it.

Are travel systems and "all in ones" really worth it?
Before you buy a travel system, make sure it meets all your needs.

Toys, Kids' Books, and Videos

Introduce your child to Angelina Ballerina
An adorable video about the life of an adorable ballerina mouse.

And she'll have fun, fun, fun till her Daddy takes the VW away...
What's more fun than a pink Barbie Jeep? How about a yellow VW convertible?

Kettler Kalypso - All tricycles are not the same
A tricycle is a tricycle, right? Nope.

Supersaucer - Tons of fun, but pricey
It's fun, but is it more fun than less expensive exersaucers?

Dr. Seuss's ABCs - Wonderful, from Aunt Annie's alligator all the way to Zizzer-zazzer-zuzz
One of my favorite Dr. Seuss books (and a favorite of my daughter as well).

Forget the Mozart Effect, get the Baby Mozart effect
Baby Mozart is a great video for infants and toddlers that gives plenty of opportunity for interaction and provides many teachable moments. Or you can plop your kid in front of it while take a quick sanity break. Either way, it's a good thing.

Baby Bach: Baby Mozart's less attractive cousin
Baby Bach isn't a bad video, but it suffers in comparison to Baby Mozart.

Bouncing Tigger and Roo - A favorite at our house
They bounce, they sing, they entertain, they distract, they get rid of bad moods... what else could you ask for?

Little Tikes Aquarium Shape Sorter - Great for the youngest "sorters"
Unlike other shape sorters, this toy can be used by younger children without frustration.

Little Tikes Climb and Slide Playhouse - Lots of sliding and climbing fun for the little ones, but what about older kids?
A great smaller slide for little kids or indoor use. Families with more children, or older children, may want to consider a larger slide.

I found The Rainbow Fish disturbing... what is it teaching?
It's not a lesson I want my daughter to learn.

Other Baby Gear

Return to categories

The First Years Compact Food Grinder - Should they be allowed to call it a grinder?
It's more like a smoosher. And I don't mean that in a good way.

Huggies Natural Care Wipes make a dirty job easier
You know, some of us do get excited about this kind of stuff.

Ulti Mam - The discriminating baby's choice
Hey, if you have to use a pacifier (and you know who you are), this is the one to use.

Fisher Price Soft Spray Tub - Don't be seduced by the sprayer
It's a nice tub that has some good features, but the sprayer is pretty useless.

Setting up a nursery: the basics (or, the dummies guide to nursery essentials)
Before you pick wallpaper and matching curtains, make sure you've taken care of the essentials.

No Pack N Play? What was I thinking?
I thought I didn't need this handy-dandy playpen-and-bassinet combo, but I was so wrong.

Heinz Baby Food - Read the label first
All "bananas" are not the same - some are full of sugar and tapioca.

Safety 1st Digital Pacifier Thermometer - Hey, this isn't MY pacifier!
A pacifier with a built-in thermometer sounds like a great idea, but it doesn't always work.

Lands' End Deluxe Do-It-All - The mother of all diaper bags
This amazing bag carries everything you need (and then some) in style and keeps it organized.

Nursing or not, you'll love the Boppy pillow
We're still using ours with our 2-year-old... trust me, you'll wonder how you survived without it.

Safety 1st Swing 'N Lock Gate - Back to the old wooden gate for me
The Swing 'N Lock Gate doesn't work any better than less expensive baby gates.

Infant Motrin works, but it's not as convenient as Tylenol
Good product, bad package design.

Have diaper bag, will travel - or, can I change a freakin' diaper in here?
Traveling with baby.

Our happy baby - coincidence or Good Start?
Our success story with Carnation Good Start formula.

Evenflo Nurser - A small annoyance
Why didn't I like this? It's a little thing, but little things mean a lot.

RF-Link Wireless Video Baby Monitor - Worth its weight in gold
This is the only reason we were finally able to move our daughter into her own room.

Pregnancy

Return to categories

Duo Maternity Belt - Not perfect, but it worked
No, it only looks like a torture device.

You can get a false positive result on a home pregnancy test
Many Epinionators will tell you it's not possible, but they're mistaken. Find out why it happens and how to minimize the chance, whether you're fertile or infertile.

Should you take the AFP/triple screen test?
It's probably the most misunderstood test ever offered to pregnant women. Find out what it really tells you and why it's impossible to have a "false positive."

Infertility

How to pick a doctor: a guide for infertile couples
The right doctor makes all the difference. Here are some suggestions for finding one.

Everything you know about infertility is wrong
If you're infertile, most of this won't be new to you, but it might help explain things to well-meaning friends and relatives (not to mention annoying busybodies).

OvuKit Ovulation Predictor - Do you have a degree in chemistry?
You might need it for this complex, expensive, but accurate test.

Stila Eye Shadow Singles
At last I get to review the greatest eyeshadow on Earth!

Bobbi Brown Long Wear Gel Eyeliner
You'll get this away from me when you pry it out of my cold dead hands.

Opium for Women by Yves St Laurent
Mmmmmmm... for the dominatrix in you.

The ultimate color enhancing shampoo
Use it right, you get gorgeous color. Use it wrong, you get pink bangs.

Sephora.com brings you the good, the bad, and the ugly of beauty
Sephora.com is one of my favorite online stores, but I have one warning for those who shop there. (Yes, you have to read my review to see what the warning is.)

My lips, but better, with Neutrogena Moisture Shine
Neutrogena Moisture Shine is mislabelled as a lipgloss in my opinion (and that's what you're here for, right?). But I still like it.

Outlast at last!
Cover Girl Outlast is a impressive long-lasting color. Given my reaction to other long-lasting lip colors, I was surprised at how well it performed.

Maybelline Lip Polish - Back to the '80s for you, Maybelline!
At the other end of the lip color spectrum, we have this goopy unpleasant stuff.

L'Oreal Soft Effects Duo Eyeshadow - Soft, subtle and beautiful
Until Epinions adds Stila eyeshadow, I'll have to limit my praise to L'Oreal. But it's been a favorite of mine for years, and it's just as nice as many pricier shadows.

Colorstay Eyeliner Pencil - Not worth the trouble
I know lots of reviewers love this one, but it was just too hard and crumbly for me.

Maybelline "Great" Lash? Only for a brief, shining moment
Am I the only person on earth who isn't gaga over Great Lash? And what's with that tacky tube? (Yes, the category says "Volum' Express" - for some reason, the name got changed during the redesign, and Epinions has not corrected it yet).

Revlon Colorstay Lipcolor - An idea whose time has not yet come
I can still feel it sucking the moisture out of my lips.

I didn't take a shine to Kenra Reflect Shine
This spray-on didn't add noticeable shine to my hair. I have some suggestions for other products that perform better in my experience.

Kenra - The "straightening serum" that gives me great curls
If you have curly hair, heads up! Even if you never straighten your hair, you should consider adding this product to your arsenal.

Imodium Advanced - No thanks, I'll take diarrhea instead
Yes, it is possible for the cure to be worse than the disease.

Clearasil Foaming Face Wash - It cleans, but does it clear?
You can't prove it by me. It's a great cleanser, though.

Neutralize the blue: Estee Lauder Self-Action Tanning Creme
The best choice for those of us trying not to look like vampires.

Zia Ultimate Hydrating Facial Mask - Not for faces only
Do your elbows and heels deserve such luxury?

Books, Movies, and Television

Return to categories

Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal
My new favorite book.

The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover - Two thumbs down (not to mention other body parts)
One of the worst movies I've ever seen. And that's saying a lot.

Rolie Polie Olie - In a word, charming!
A gorgeous computer-animated cartoon that you have to see to appreciate.

The Powerpuff Girls - A kiddie show for adult tastes
This is one of those shows that adults appreciate as much as children do, if not more.

TLC's A Wedding Story - Who do these people think they're kidding?
I actually like the show, except for one little thing...

Average flowers, above-average amount of hassle
I gave Proflowers.com a chance and they betrayed me! On Mother's Day!

Sephora.com brings you the good, the bad, and the ugly of beauty
Sephora.com is one of my favorite online stores, but I have one warning for those who shop there. (Yes, you have to read my review to see what the warning is.)

Webcertificate and multiple personality disorder, or, why the dot-com crash is all my fault
Don't follow in my evil footsteps... please use your webcertificate only for good and moral purposes..

The "I hate AOL bandwagon?"
I know it's trendy to hate AOL, so I'm jumpin' on that bandwagon. No, really, it has some good points too.

Calphalon Commercial Non-Stick Cookware - I love my Calphalon!
Yes, it's pricey, but I don't regret it for a second. And I'm not even a gourmet cook.

Miracid - The cure for yellow leaves
Miracid is the only reason my bedding plants are still alive.

Advantage Flea Control saved the day!
Kills fleas dead (sorry, Raid!) and keeps them away.

Car buying for dummies
In other words, for those of us who don't sell cars for a living. This method can save you thousands of dollars. Or at least a lot of frustration.

My beloved Saturn
Alas, my 1994 SL1... what a great little car it was.

Olympus Stylus Zoom - A great little camera
Whether you're a complete amateur or a semi-pro, you'll appreciate this compact little wonder.

Predictible, affordable, and yummy... The Olive Garden
Not for those who really care if their Italian cuisine is authentic, but The Olive Garden is always good and always a "safe" choice.
