My name is Josh Davis, one of many in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. In fact, there was another Josh Davis that preceded me through gradeschool, and a different one who lives one block over from me. Strange.
I was born in 1975 in Dallas, grew up in Arlington, and have pretty much hung around here, barring visits in other places, and a brief sting in Longview.
I'm the guy who reads dictionaries and encyclopedias. Seriously. Not cover to cover, but as as an example, yesterday, I spent the better part of 5 hours reading on aphasia conditions. As a kid, the 1968 Encyclopedia Britannica was the best. It's all digital.
I have a wife (May, 1999) and 2 kids (2001 and 2003). I really like having them in my life. I like watching my kids learn, grow, interact, and basically amaze me daily.
I like gardening, but I don't do it as often as I should. I have a few cactii, a few houseplants, and a few yard plants. Unfortunately, not enough shade in some places, too much shade in others, and insufficient balance of water vs need. Mostly, laziness.
I read in spurts. Sometimes, only tech manuals and wikipedia, but sometimes I'll get on a roll (Dark Tower series in 3 months). Mostly, my reading involves Sci Fi of some sort, from light to hard, as long as the story is good and has really good characters.
I'm a travelling consultant. I've been doing this for about a year as of July 2006. It's interesting, a little challenging. Life's all about having fun and meeting good people. Consulting puts me in contact with alot of great people, and I love computers, so it's perfect.
Before this, I spent over 7 years at a desk with IBM doing phone support in various AIX, Linux and multiplatform queues. 2 years of level 2 support for SysBack, 2 years for L1.5 support for TSM, and 3 years doing L2 support for pSeries LPAR and L1 support for system management clusters.
Prior to that I worked for 2 years in network operations at a small ISP, and 2 years earlier I tried to help an internet company launch, but it failed due to poor management. Before that, it was misc small jobs, mostly retail or administrative.
I've had a computer since I was 6. I'm very much an applied/hands-on sort of guy. I learn really well by doing, and I'm really good at converting written text into visualizations. I try all sorts of things, and tend to be really good at finding problems. I'm almost as good at fixing them. I run into alot of problems because I'm always doing something, preferrably new and complex.
Sometimes it seems I focus on the negative. Ultimately, I'm hypercritical of details. Critical as in critical-thinking, not as in disliking everything. I can point out the flaws in something and still like it. Usually, that's the way it works.
Most of the time, when comparing things, seeing the faults is a better indicator of product specs than listing it's abilities, unless it has something really special. This is because there are usually 27 of the same thing, each with just a tiny difference. If you can handle the defects of one, then there's no need to try the other 26.
Because of this, I figured it would be good to share my opinions of various products. Mediocre products won't usually get reviews by me, which is a shame for many people, since many peopl don't want garbage, but don't want the gold plated super deluxe either.
I will review things which stand out from their peers for one reason or another. Every review is potentially a work-in-progress. If you have comments for my reviews, please fill them out. I'm not error free, and prefer fine distinctions in accuracy over being the sole source of accuracy.
