JobDirect tries. It wants to help job seekers, particularly young ones, find entry-level employment in today's cutthroat job market. But its self-acclaimed selling point -- a feature that matches jobs with users, rather than requiring the users to search for themselves -- just doesn't work.
The site is relatively easy to navigate and understand, and it boasts a fair number of entry-level jobs through which users can browse. I haven't found any that appealed to me yet, but if you're interested in Sales, Manufacturing, Medical or Engineering fields, you might get lucky.
JobDirect doesn't want you to browse, though. It wants to do the hard part for you. Here's how it works: Users hit the site's home page, enter their education level and some basic information, and begin building their resume. They highlight their skills and career interests, then wait for the JobDirect Bouncemaster to email them with the exciting news: "JobDirect has matched you with 74 jobs!"
"Yay! Lots of opportunities for me!" I thought, as a novice user. When I visited the JobDirect Inbox, however, I found jobs that have nothing to do with the career fields I specified. Every couple of days, I get dehumanized yet enthusiastic emails from the Bouncemaster exclaiming about the new jobs in my inbox. Never do they have anything to do with anything I want.
The site makes it simple to edit and deactivate your resume, as well as to change your job search or your date of availability. I did try to change my job search; I deleted a Career Field that the JobDirect search engine might have misinterpreted. Still, I met with no luck. Today, when I checked my job inbox, I had to sort through jobs ranging from Mechanical Engineer to Food Scientist to Assistant at Ned Steven's Gutter Cleaning, though I had requested information only on careers in Arts fields.
One final qualm: while your resume exists on the JobDirect site, you can't tell whether potential employers are viewing it. It's something I want to know, because it would tell me whether employers use the site to look for potential employees.
Overall, there are jobs at JobDirect, and the jobs are entry-level. But if these are the only entry-level opportunities out there, I am disheartened, because JobDirect's selection is decidedly limited. I hope they can work more diligently to recruit employers from more varied arenas.
