When Priceline.com first got started, I was raving over it. I thought that Priceline was the new wave of the future. Well, you live and learn. I received an "URGENT EMAIL" notice from Priceline.com Webhouse for Groceries and Gas yesterday and I will admit that I was surprised by its contents. Apparently, the service for groceries and gasoline discounts is no longer available.
Over the next ninety days, the powers that be over at Priceline.com Webouse will be winding down their service to its customers. Actually, I won't be that greatly affected by this decision because I stopped using Priceline card several months ago. I will admit here, that I started disliking a great deal about the site itself. Sometimes, when websites call themselves improving their service to the public, they actually do subtle damage that in the long run leads to their demise. I'm sure you can relate to this.
The service that Priceline.com Webhouse for Groceries and Gas offered the public had good intentions. Consumers were allowed to log into the site and bid for prices below sale prices in most stores. If you were a successful bidder, you were notified and congratulated on making your bid for the prices you wished to pay. Unfortunately, more times than not, you DID NOT GET THE PRICE YOU WANTED! There were opportunities to get groceries at half price if you had web tokens which you could earn by signing up for various affiliate offers, like magazine subscriptions. The gasoline savings opportunity came later, a few months ago in fact. I tried this service only once and saved 30 cents off each gallon. At the time, gasoline prices nationwide were at an all time high, so I was pleased. Several friends of mine had trouble at the pump while trying to use their discounted card. Possible cause for the ending to this service.
What little information the email apologetically told me, apparently Priceline.com Webhouse was just a bit unprepared for the millions of consumers who signed and began using their service. They were overwhelmed, deluged and in big trouble. What began as a wonderful new service to the public, became a huge snowball rolling uncontrollably downhill.
The good news is that the service they offered for consumers to bid for low airfare, auto rentals and hotel fares will remain in effect, at least for the time being. The workers over at Priceline.com Webhouse are doing their best to refund any monies due to consumers who have all ready had bids awarded to them for groceries or gasoline.
I will state that my family did save hundreds of dollars on groceries and a few bucks on gasoline during Priceline.com Webhouse's short reign. For that, I am eternally grateful.
