I selected this Best Jobs USA online job service because it was one of the first in an alphabetical list of many. My girlfriend has been trying to find good full-time employment in Los Angeles, now that she has graduated. She has already found a job, but it is too far away to consider. So that's why I am trying to help her find a good job within the well-defined specifications that she wants: namely, graphic design.
Initial Inspection
At first glance, bestjobsusa.com appears to be a very clean website, with nice graphics. There are many tools available, such as a section of the site where you can post your resume, a section full of links to guide your job application process, etc. I will list the main categories:
Best Jobs 500:
Simply a list of the top 500 employers (as regarded by BestJobsUSA.com), it offers no specific information on its top 500 employers. What I mean is that it offers the criteria by which it had come up with the rankings, but it does not show how each of the top 500 companies compare based upon the criteria. So just imagine a list of 500 names. Doesn't tell you much.
Post Your Resume:
Like most other job hunting services, BestJobsUSA allows you to post your resume online in their resume databank. The procedure is composed of four parts, fairly quick and painless. Their privacy agreement shows that they do not relinquish any of your information to marketers (or any of the sort), but only to prospective employers. The big downside is that you cut and paste your resume in straight text. There is no tool for formatting your resume (unlike Jobtrak, who lets you upload your resume in Word format or any text format and retain its original formatting).
Career Assistant:
Career Assistant is composed of links, most pointing to other websites. It is a good resource because they point you in the direction of some helpful tools, such as Your Missing Link, a targeted resume distribution service. However, BestJobsUSA does not offer many proprietary tools, which is evident by the redirection to other websites.
America's Finest Companies:
Basically, every company BestJobsUSA could find is on this listing. Each company has produced its own customized page that links to the listing, trying to promote their company to the prospective recruit. Not very helpful, but good for people who don't have any idea what company they'd like to work for, and just like to browse prospective companies that are hiring.
Employers of Choice:
It is nothing more than an accumulation of ratings and rankings by other websites and organizations. It is handy for browsing, because it allows you to look at top-rated employers based upon different criteria. However, it is not super comprehensive, but rather an accumulation from a few different sources.
Free HR Postings:
It is just an online submission form for submitting an HR position. If you looked at some of its categorization, it seems they try to find jobs for applicants, as well as fufill the jobs on the other side (the HR jobs whose job it is to hire others). Nothing big.
Summary
BestJobsUSA is a good source of information, but do not expect to find many jobs through it. Not only does it lack the publicity of the big online job services such as Monster.com or hotjobs.com, but as a direct result of this, there are not too many jobs posted through this website. For instance, when I tried to search for a position that would suit my girlfriend's criteria (California, Creative Arts / Media), it only turned up one job. And this job was posted three weeks ago. It was not even located in Los Angeles either. And i know for a fact that there are many listings for graphic design work in LA on a consistent basis. I couldn't believe how little the job search had turned up.
So the moral of this story is to use this site only for reference, for purposes such as collecting information, etc. Heck, they even have a Homefair-powered Job Salary Calculator. Its no big deal, but its a plus in my mind that they have that utility. I've seen it on other websites before, so it was good that they had it. Also, if you want to find good job listings, try a monster.com or a hotjobs.com. You'll probably have better luck there. But definitely check out some of their compilations of rankings of companies. There is no company-specific rankings, but at least you can see how companies stack up to each other as determined by different criteria.
P.S.
I also liked the fact that they had something called WorkExchange, which serves kind of like an Elance.com, which brings professionals and employers together in a B-to-B kind of manner.
