Sites like this are why I love the Internet

VacationSpot is one of the best examples I know of how the Internet is changing the world.
How is VacationSpot any different from all the other hotel network sites or travel-booking sites, you ask? It's simple: VacationSpot aggregates all those individually owned chalets, log cabins, ranches, villas, and inns that were previously largely inaccessible to the average traveler except through extensive localized research, niche magazine classified ads, and word-of-mouth.
In other words, this is exactly the kind of business that couldn't exist without the Internet. For not only does VacationSpot provide listings of all of these places in a searchable, well-categorized database, but it provides real-time updated availability, prices, photographs, and comparison tools, as well--all features which depend on the unique real-time networking capabilities the Internet provides.
Even better, VacationSpot offers personalization tools so you can save properties you come across for future reference, creating a "my spot" page full of your favorite listings. So I can look for that log cabin in Montana or a villa in Mexico months in advance, and know that when I come back to the site ready to book, all my choices will still be there and easily accessible.
The only downsides so far are technical ones: I run into an unusually high number of technical glitches when loading pages on the site, particularly when trying to view listing details. Needless to say, it is frustrating when a series of the links don't work; hopefully they are working out a way to prevent this in the future.
Summary
I've always loved staying at places that are off the beaten path and individually owned because they often retain much more of their charm and exist in less-touristy areas. Before VacationSpot, though, I never had a sophisticated and efficient way to find them. I've used a lot of other travel and hotel sites, and still do for other travel-related functions. But when it comes to planning where to stay on my vacation, I won't go anywhere else now.
