Good site but beware if you have to change reservation

I have used Travelocity several times to make flight and rental car reservations and in general I like it and expect to continue using it. The search tools are good, a huge improvement over services like eaasysabre that I've used in the past (I haven't tried current competitors).
I found out a couple of things the hard way on my last transaction with them, though. I booked a flight for a friend and then found out that I had to change the reservation. Other than coughing up the $75 change fee I figured this would not be a big problem, and it certainly shouldn't have been.
My first surprise was when I called the airline to make the change and was told that only travelocity, and not the airline, could make the change. I don't know if this is true of all airlines or not. This isn't necessarily a huge problem but it made me uncomfortable--making changes should be straightforward and shouldn't need to go through an intermediary. As it turned out I was oh so right to worry.
Somebody at travelocity customer service made the change and I figured that was that. The surprise came when my friend showed up at the ticket counter and found that the change had not been made. Fortunately she was able to get on the flight, and I didn't even have to ask for a refund because I was never charged.
So, if you are going to use travelocity, be careful. If everything works it's a great service, but everything doesn't always work. In the future I will probably look for fares on their web site but book directly with the airline. I will *certainly* do that if it is an international flight or if I think I'm likely to have to change anything. And if I do make a booking or change through their site or (especially) their customer service, I'll call the airlines and confirm it!
This last point is pretty important. Obviously travelocity screwed up but I could have fixed things if I had checked with the airline. So Travelocity doesn't get 5 stars and neither do I.
