Priceline can be a dream or a nightmare. I have received great cheap direct flights at decent times, and I have purchased some horrible flight plans.
I have used priceline.com about 15 times. I keep coming back because I am constantly making last minute travel, and I want the cheapest flight I can find. Here is how I use Priceline.
The firs thing I do is check the other cheap airline reservations cites. I usually go to Travelocity.com, hotdeal.com, and a couple others. After doing this I check the airline sites, and Smarterliving.com. Around this time I have a good idea of a "fair" market value for my flight.
The next thing I do is go to Priceline.com and make a bid. When making a bid always remember that taxes are not included, and these taxes usually add 20-45 dollars to your flight. I advise making your bid accordingly.
Here are the obvious downfalls of Priceline.com. 1) You cannot specify the times of your flight. 2) You have a better chance of having your bid accepted if you agree to fly out of different airports and make stops along the way. 3)The constant feeling that you should have bid lower. 4) The inability to bid on a one-way flight. 5) The frustration of having a bid rejected.
Nonetheless, if you are a flexible traveler, you can get a good deal. Here are some of the round-trip deals I have had accepted. I have flown from New York to Louisville, KY for $150 twice. New York to Los Angeles for $200. New York to St. Louis for $200. On the other hand I have had to bid as high as $400 for a last minute cross-country trip around the holidays. However, please remember that I have never paid more than the lowest fair I could find somewhere else.
--On the above mentioned flights, some consisted of many stop overs and horrible times, but some ended up being wonderful. You really don't know what you are going to get until you receive an email from them.
If you are in need of a cheap ticket, and have semi-flexible plans, try it out.
