Everyone knows this is rated as the most popular, most used, blah blah blah blah blah.
Why do I like Yahoo though?
You gotta understand that most search engines just index and pull stuff in using the meta tags and title of web sites. Not Yahoo.
Yahoo relies on submissions from users and their own searches to put sites into their data base. Yahoo doesn't use a spider, instead it uses people to make up their data base of websites.
They will go to the web sites submitted and make a judgement call, seeing if the site fits into their standards and making sure it follows the rules and was submitted to the correct category listing at Yahoo.
This is why it takes so long for many sites to get into Yahoo. They do everything by hand and the decisions are made by real people, not just a bot that spiders looking for meta tags.
Using this method helps Yahoo make up a directory of sites that are good quality web pages with accurate listings and topics. When you are searching for pages that have been around for a long time and are reliable, Yahoo is usually the place to find them!
The down side to this method is simply the pages they list are older and might not be as up to date. If some new item came on the market, while you might find it in the Yahoo news section, you are not likely to find directory listings of web sites in relation to it, because their method is so slow, new subjects are not likely to turn up for several weeks, or even months!
Also new and smaller personal websites often don't get listed, unless they are nice and professionally done, in some search cases this can be a down side. So I use another engine for that sort of search.
Yahoo uses a directory listing, instead of just a pages listing to help you navigate - much like a PC's file tree. This method makes navigation real easy and I do like it this way. It is easy to find what I need using this method.
However if you've ever noticed they offer a web page hits after the directory listings. Usually the page hits list is like other search engines. Only the thing is, they often are not reliable for finding what you want and they are just jumbled together, so it's not easy to find anything with just the web page hits. So you better hope that your subject has a category listing! ;)
