I have been purchasing items over the web for years. I always use a credit card so that I have some sort of protection in case there is a problem. Thank God! Recently, after winning an auction at Ubid, I had many problems that were only cleared up after contacting my credit card company.
After winning a bid for a laptop computer for $949.00, I requested that it be shipped overnight. Shipping a laptop computer overnight is not cheap. I was expecting to spend as much as $55 on shipping alone(Ubid doesn't tell you the shipping cost until after it is shipped and your credit card has been billed). I won the auction at around 8:00PM EST. on a Thursday. I expected that it would be shipped out on Friday and I would receive it on Monday. But just to be sure, I called customer service on Friday. They told me it was in Credit Card Processing and that it should be completed soon and would be shipped out that day.
Over the weekend however, I became very concerned because the information on "My Page" (the page that is SUPPOSED to give you UP-TO-THE-MINUTE account information, but really doesn't) showed that my order was still in Credit Card Processing. So on Monday I called customer service again, this time I was transferred to the credit department where I was told that the charge had be authorized and that it would be shipped that day. So again I waited.
On Tuesday, after never seeing a change in the information on "My Page" I called. Once again I was transferred to the credit department that informed me that the had been a problem verifying the card because of an address problem (my bank has my address as "street" and Ubid has it as "st.", be problem!). Then I was informed that if may day another day or so to complete credit card processing. At that point, being very frustrated, I cancelled my order only to find out that they had already charged my credit card!! At that point I asked to speak with a supervisor.
I was transferred to a supervisor's voice mailbox that was out of town all week. I called back (and waited on hold once again for aprox. 10 minutes, the usual wait time) this time I asked to speak with a supervisor that was actually there, I explained that the last time I was transferred it was to a supervisor who was out of town. They said ok and promptly transferred to the same supervisor's mailbox. After called back again and waiting on hold again, I found the assistant supervisor's ext. number. I left a voicemail but my call was ever returned. So I called back later and actually got the person, A real, live person! He seemed more than a little startled when I told him I was the one who left the voicemail (see at Ubid there is no way to actually ask for an extension at any prompt, you have to know how to transfer yourself in a large voicemail system, luckily they use the same system my company uses). I explained my problem and told him that I wanted the block removed from my credit card immediately (the people in the credit card department told me they would do nothing because if they didn't act on the authorization, it would drop off in 10 days anyway. 10 days of them holding my money...I don't think so) So Finally after 9 phone calls to Ubid and 5 phone calls to my credit card company, the problem is resolved and I am back where I started, looking for a laptop. My advice, stay away from Ubid.
