I openly admit to being camera happy, and therefore taking way too many pictures than I could ever afford to develop at times. Thankfully, Snapfish is around to solve my developing dilemmas!
Snapfish is an online service the posts a minimal fee for otherwise "free" photo processing. You sign up, they send you mailing envelopes, you send in your film, and the rest is history! The only postage you pay is for receiving your actual prints after development (only $1.69.) Snapfish uses Kodak Laboratories, and Kodak film paper, so all prints are of exceptional quality. Plus, you get an email notifying you that your prints are available to view on-line! (No more hassle of scanning your prints in, or even forking out money to get a picture disk or CD).
The only requirement Snapfish has is that you take the time (not long in my opinion) to scope out your pictures at their site. This allows their advertisers to get hits, while your pictures remain free. If you choose not to do this viewing, you will be charged an addition $3 or $4. Personally, I really enjoyed the online viewing and photo album set-up. This way I don't feel like I need to make copies of pictures to send out to all the friends and family who might want to see them. I can now simply add them to my "sharing" list for that particular album, and it's all available for them to look at in their own time.
Aside from the nominal postage fee, and the possible additional charge should you choose to ignore the 5 minutes it might take to check out the on-line shots, Snapfish may ask you some survey type questions when you log in. This information is yet another way that they claim to earn their money. I've always participated in any survey, or info leaving.... especially when I get something sweet out of the deal, so this is not a problem for me.
The only potential problems I can see is the wait you may have before your prints and/or online picture box are available. Since they do have to rely on the mail system, this can be a slightly longer wait then your local photo shop or even grocery store developer. However the price is right, and the quality is superb enough for me to withstand the wait.
What if I run out of mailing envelops you ask? Well, that was my first question too, since we just had a graduation that took up almost 10 rolls... (note they do limit the number of rolls each person can develop in a year at the "free" rate: 24 [that's 2 a month!]) Obviously they didn't send us 10 envelops the first time around. SO I went online to see what I could do. Luckily, you can also choose to print out a mailing label to apply to your own envelope if you simply can not wait until the other envelops arrive. They seem to have everything covered so far.
For now they can only develop 35mm film (no APS, sorry!) with the normal color processing. I sent in a black and white roll without noticing this. They, in turn, graciously returned the roll intact with a kind note explaining why they couldn't process it. So feel safe sending in your treasured pictures, they will treat them with the utmost respect!
