Several months ago a friend of mine first introduced me to the hunger site. Since then, I have been visiting it every day that I go online.
How It Works
This site works on the basis the entire web economy is based on sponsors. Sponsors can come in many different forms. The most numerous is the banner. Banners are small advertisements that you place on your Website and you get paid either per page view, or per click through (clicking through to the advertisers Website.) The main donation generator is based on this type of sponsoring. When you enter the Website, there is a big button with the words "Donate Free Food Here". Upon clicking on this button, you are taken to the sponsor page. Each sponsor donates 1/4 a cup of food per page view. The number of sponsors usually ranges from six to nine, per day. This means that your daily donation ranges from 1 1/2 cups to 2 1/4 cups per click.
Another donation form is by shopping through the Hunger Site Shopping Village. This involves another form of sponsoring. By shopping at the listed websites through the Hunger Site, the site from which you are buying gives the hunger site a small commission for the sale. The Hunger Site then spends this money in buying more food. For every dollar that you spend on the site, the Hunger Site gets enough of a commission to buy a cup of food. Thus, for every dollar you spend, a cup of food is donated to feed the hungry.
The Hunger Site also has it's own banners. This is so that the total amount of people donating keeps on increasing. This allows them to donate more and more food as time goes on, in theory at least. There is also a letter writing forum, allowing you to quickly write letters to your friends, family and associates about their site. There is also a newsletter that you can sign up for, that will insure that you get monthly updates on the progress of the site, and of any new forms of donating food.
Another way that this site attempts to fight hunger and starvation is through petitions. There is currently a petition directed to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. The current goal is 1 million signatures before the September 1 deadline.
Now this site is not the first charity site that I have ever heard of, or visited on a regular basis. It does however, have numerous advantages over most of the sites out there.
Speed
This site is one of the fastest loading charity sites out there. Now while this may not seem like a big problem, especially for those of you with DSL and T1 lines, for people like me, with a 56k or lower, the difference is very noticeable. Most other sites take an inordinate amount of time for something that could be very simple.
Not For Profit
This site is not for profit site, which boils down to them not skimming off the top of the donations, or even pocketing the proceeds. Now while this may seem terrible, there are sites out there that do this, so be weary.
Easy Name
The simple name of this site makes it very easy to remember its address. Now while this may not seem very useful either, thanks to the favorite site section on your browser, it can come in handy if you move around a lot. I often find myself going online at some unknown computer when I am away. The easy address makes it very easy to go to the site and make my daily donation.
Overall, this is a very good site. I would highly recommend it to everyone. It's easy interface, quick reload time, and not for profit basis make it one of the better donation sites out there. The only downside that I can find with this site, is the slightly small donation per daily click. It's not too much lower than other sites, and it is more than made up for the other features at this site. Also be sure to check out the sister site, www.therainforestsite.com. And always remember we are world citizens, and for two seconds out of the day, there is no excuse not to donate.
If this is not enough for you, charity wise, check my member profile page for other donation sites.
