Sorry to See Them Go

Yesterday it was announced that the Priceline.com divisions that administered the Priceline gas and grocery programs would be closed. According to management, this came as the result of being unable to secure operating capitol for these sections. Priceline management further stated that capitol was withheld because these divisions had not yet made any profits. News programs played up the fact that the Better Business Bureau in Connecticut was forced to withdraw Priceline's membership because of complaints.
I am very unhappy to see this happen. I have used the Priceline grocery card and was very pleased with my savings. I thought that the Priceline grocery savings would be here to stay. On my last shopping trip, I had saved almost 50% off my grocery bill. The program allowed buyers to use manufacturer's coupons and store discount cards in addition to the regular savings from Priceline. It was a great concept for the consumer.
There were some drawbacks to the grocery program. Weekend shopping was a no-no since you could never get through to the website. Of course not, it was jammed with people trying to take advantage of the great deals! In the end, I guess it was the fact that Priceline did offer such great savings (not to mention the fact that their stock plummeted!), that led to their demise.
I'm sure the other Priceline divisions will hold their own. The have holdings in hotels, rental cars, etc. So, maybe there is a chance that the will do some "cash shuffling" and come back strong with a new grocery and gas program. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!
