I chose Priceline because I've found myself that I can get pretty low rates at Hotels just surfing, and I'm not particular about what nice Hotel I stay in as long as it's nice.
Had it not been for Priceline, I would have called directly vs. using another online reservation system. I've found that the online systems give you a good rack rate comparison but the local hotel front desk people know of better deals available.
I've rented 3 hotel rooms with Priceline.
Once, in Tacoma, I got into the Hilton for $50 for a Saturday night's stay. I had specified "3 star or better." After their fees, I think the total cost to me was $58. I did fill out a Discover Card application, which added $25 to my bid (paid by Discover).
Two months later, I got into the Hilton in Eugene for $48 for a Saturday night's stay. This was for a concert trip. This was "4 star." I filled out another Discover Card application (even though my last one was approved). Hey, why not?
But before going on that trip, I had a friend who also wanted to go. But he wanted a different room than me and my companion. So I went back to Priceline and this time I specified the same $48. It did not offer me a Discover Card application. It put me in a nearby hotel that was very, very terrific. I can't remember the name, but it was quite the resort. The room easily could have gone for $200 a night.
The best thing about Priceline is their ability to get these low prices. The worst thing is the lack of control. Notice the above Eugene trip had me and my friend in two different hotels. Had I been smarter at the time, I would have called Hilton and asked them for a second room at the Priceline deal price. I'm certain they would have given it to me. I just didn't think if that.
I recommend Priceline only under the following conditions:
1. You know you are going to travel, and are willing to risk paying in advance a non-refundable charge
2. You are completely flexible within Priceline's constraints. You'll take any x-star hotel (you specify), non-smoking, 2-person room (may be a single King bed) in town
