The Hungersite is an example of the Internet at its' very best. The brain child of a programmer from Indiana, The Hungersite takes the concept of pay per view advertising on the internet and donates the proceeds to the United Nations World Food Program.
How much of the advertising revenue is donated to fight hunger
The world is full of cynics. Often times, there is a good reason for that. It is not unheard of for "sham" charities to exist that have operating expenses in the 90%+ range. Fortunately, The Hunger Site is not like that. They actually donate 100% of the proceeds from advertising views to the United Nations World Hunger Fund.
Once the money hits the U.N., it is still relatively effective in meeting its' intended use. Each banner viewed on The Hunger Site generates 1/2 cent. When I visited The Hunger Site today, there were 8 advertisers. (This number varies), so I generated 4 cents for the U.N. World Food Fund. 66% of each donation the U.N. receives is used for the cost of food itself, 10% goes to the U.N.'s overhead, and 24% goes to the transportation of food. The types of staple foods that the U.N. buys (things like wheat, rice, maize ) cost and average of $231.07 in 1998 and
$236.46 in 1997. When you do all the math to convert this food to cost per ounce, it is .663 cents. Once ounce of staple food is equal to about 1/2 cup cooked volume. Therefore, each advertiser donates enough money to get 1/2 cup of food to a hungry person. Therefore, my donation gave 8 people a meal today. (Note: You can only make one donation per day, but in all honesty, there have been times where I have visited in time spans separated by several hours and was apparently credited for extra visits. )
Why don't you go to www.thehungersite.com and help feed some people with me.
