I first heard of Mobshop.com from another website which was trying to get enough people involved to lower the price on a related product (TheForce.net & "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace", respectively, if you cared). They mentioned that if they could get over 720 people to buy it, the video would only be $9.95. That price was FAR below what I would be spending elsewhere.
So I checked out the site, and there were already 500 buyers signed up, so I knew that they would make the 720 and added my name. Sure enough, a couple of hours later, the cycle - as the quasi-auctions are called - ended with me getting a price of $9.95 for the just released Star Wars movie.
MobShop is a great site to try to find a product that you already know about for cheap. The process is simple. They order in bulk, and if they can succeed in selling all of those items they have ordered, they get it CHEAP. For you, it means that you check out what they have to offer, and then see what the price levels are. There are usually 4 or 5 levels of price, depending on how many people order that product. As more get in on it, the price drops for EVERYONE - even if you ordered it at the higher price.
There are some downsides to Mobshop.com, too. First of all, their selection is limited, as is detailed information. You are best served by this site if you know what you are looking for or can do the research somewhere else.
Also, since their prices start a little above normal (the starting price, say, would easily be beat by Amazon), you have to hope that they get enough buyers to bring the price down to what you are hoping to spend. There is a caveat to this, however. You can preset the highest amount that you want to spend, and this allows you to hold off actually being a 'buyer' until it reaches that level. Say you see a DVD player and the original price is $500, but the low price - assuming that they get 90 buyers - is $199. You like the deal at $199, and even at the next higher level of $249, but you don't want to get caught paying $500 for the player. You can put in your 'bid' at $199, and you are only added to the group if it reaches that level. Makes everything safer for the consumer.
Overall, this is a great site if you are looking to get something really inexpensively IF they have it. I have used the site several times, and have gotten a deal every time I have. I recommend it highly.
