I stumbled onto MyFamily.com totally by accident. I received an email saying that I could have a free vacation if I signed up, so I did! I mean what self respecting, coupon clipping Mommy can resist a free anything ? So I signed up and sent out emails to all my family members.
Well, the more I looked at the stupid thing, the more I liked it! You can upload photos, and they make it so easy, that even technically challenged, dingy blonde house wives (like me) could do it! I started uploading photos that my Dad had taken with his digital camera, and emailing them to friends right then! All of my friends were so impressed that they begged me for membership - well not exactly, but they did like the pics! Later, I graduated to uploading picture disks (4.95 from Kodak when you get your pics developed) from my own camera!
I scheduled and held a family chat, never mind the fact that my Mom (who lives 700 feet up the road) and I were the only ones who showed up - I scheduled and held a family chat!!!! Unbelievable! MyFamily makes it so easy to keep track of birthdates, anniversaries, and most importantly, each other that i can't imagine a modern family not having a site. It is nice that my hubby's family in Texas, and my friend in SC, and my uncle in Alaska can all log in and see how my kids have grown! I can brag about their accomplishments, record video and voice clips of them, and just share them with all of my friends and family quickly, efficiently, and in a manner that is very cost effective!
I have tried various other free websites such as homestead and photo files such as growthspurts and haven't had much luck with them. I am sure that it is only my ignorance that prevents me from making them successful, but MyFamily is sooooo easy to use why would you use anyone else?
The key is that you have to get your family motivated. If you haven't heard from Uncle Bob in a month (the website keeps track of when each member logs in) then send him a quick reminder email. Keep in mind, however, that the site automatically notifies all members when new material is posted. The only bad thing about the site is that it is sometimes very slow, and sometimes the applet for "who's online" doesn't load right. Otherwise, I have had nothing but fun with it.
