No, you don't earn real money. It's all for fun. It is, however, educational if you've never played the stock market. The best way to learn how to play is just to play and figure it out for yourself.
In a nutshell, a player trades movie stars and rock stars like stocks. The price of a star stock fluctuates, just like a real stocks. Suppose a movie star hasn't done a movie in a while but he has one due out soon. This movie star's stock might be a good bet. The movie might be a hit, but it might be a flop. If it's a flop, there's a good chance his stock could plummet. Herein lies the gamble. Movie stocks are highly volatile. Knowledge of stock-buying strategy is definitely a must to play on the movie stock market, but a player must also be able to predict what movies will make a lot of money and bet accordingly.
More conservative traders might want to deal only in music stocks. For example, the stock for the new movie Bring it On flew through the roof. It's price went up a hundred points on opening weekend. The average rock star stock will only go up one or two points, so there's little chance that you'll lose big bucks on one stock. Besides the vast array of artist stocks, HSX offers a selection of options based around the summer concert tour season and the grammy awards.
Good luck getting around, though. The search engine on this site is completely useless. Say, for example, you want to invest in Michelle Pfeiffer. If you're like most people and don't know how to spell her name, you're out of luck unless you go to imdb.com and search for her name and cut and paste it in. IMDB will give you the name you need, regardless of how badly you misspelled it, and even give you several other options.
Since there is no real money to be won here and no real point, only movie or music fans will find anything redeeming on hsx.com. It's a good way to kill a few minutes and if you're good at it, it's something cute to share with your friends. If you're like me and lose tons of money, the charm will wear off fast.
