FOr some reason i am in the opinion writing mood today regarding search engines. FOr someone who attempts, usually in vain, to do all his work from the comfort of his computer, i must say that this is an important arena for me.....and what better way to round the day off than with a good opinion on a search engine. (ed note: do not use Altavista or Ask Jeeves, but feel free to go read why not...im told the Ask Jeeves opinion i wrote was funny wink wink)
First off, the best feature of Metacrawler is the choice of search option located conveniently below the text block where you type in your search. It allows you to search the word or group of words you type in in three different ways: one word and multiple words by phrase or including all words, but not in order.
For example, i was having trouble with my research paper on media literacy and a search engine like Altavista would give me sites about the fight againt illiteracy and mass media as well. By selecting the phrase option i enabled myself to get only sites in which the phrase "media literacy" was written as typed.
Some other options i enjoy about Metacrawler is that it is easily one of the fastest search engines around. It also lets you do a little bit of customizing the page if you want.
I was recently alarmed when i was directed to a site called 37.com that supposedly searched 37 engines at once or something, but that has since been retracted and i am back to my old metacrawler.
To be blunt, as i often am, nothing is wrong with this search engine. You will find what you need and you will find it fast. I just wish i had someone to tell me where to go before i made a few wrong choices.
