That is the question you will have to make your own decision on, but I will give you a peek into what I think about Yahoo.
What is a “Yahoo!”? Well, Yahoo is a lot of things now. Yahoo started off being a basic “have-everything” web site. Now, Yahoo has merged with Geocities and is a “starting page” for a lot of people.
Yahoo offers:
-A web search feature that will give you leads on any keywords you punch into it. Yahoo contains an extremely large amount of web site listings, which can make it hard to find one that is useful to what you are looking for. But with a vast selection, you also can get more information on any one given subject.
-Chat Rooms by the truck load. Yahoo has a large selection of chat rooms in all topics from “Romance” to the “Whip Cream Lounge” room for adults. Most chat rooms on Yahoo are quite busy and can be a haven for spammers. (Never give out personal information in a chat room!)
Love It: It is an easy way to find people to converse with. A topic for almost any interest. And the ability to make your own personal chat room.
Hate It: Too many advertisers and people clogging up the rooms with spam. Some people may find certain chat rooms to be less than desirable.
-The Yahoo Messenger communication system. Small chat programs that run along side of your web browser have always been popular. (AOL Instant Messenger)
Love it: Well I love the fact that I can chat to my friends anytime I see them online. I can also find people with the same interests as myself, to chat with. I can send pictures via the messenger as well as communicate in real time. #1 reason I love Yahoo Messenger, is the IGNORE button. Put the people you do not want to communicate with on ignore easily.
Hate It: People can search you out and message you. You can get easily targeted by cyber-seeking people.
-Yahoo Classifieds: Basic classified system, includes many categories to choose from.
-Yahoo Mail: Just your basic e-mail program. (free when you sign up)
-Yahoo Maps: I use this one a lot since I travel frequently. You can type in your destination and receive a printable map. (no charge)
-Yahoo Auctions: Same as the other popular auction sites.
-Yellow Pages: Just as it sounds, it is a virtual phone book.
-Free Web Pages: Hosted by Geocities (Yahoo).
Love It: FREE! Easy for beginners as well as experts. The ability to buy extra space but plenty free space given for no price.
Hate It: Pages can be slow loading due to the amount of traffic on Geocities/Yahoo. Non personal customer service. (Usually an automatic reply to any concerns you e-mail Geocities/Yahoo with.)
-Yahoo Games: Free games to play online. Many to choose from, and usually quite a few people playing at any one given time. Games range from board games to card games. My favorite is “Spades” and can be quite addictive. Yahoo now offers tournaments for those players who like a challenge.
Yahoo has many other features as well. Much too many features to list here. But overall Yahoo is an excellent site to gather information, find online pals, place personal or classified ads and more. Almost all of Yahoo is free and can accessed by anyone.
Although online harassment can run wild on Yahoo, if you stay away from chat rooms you are less likely to be targeted. Yahoo is a wonderful starting page. The down side is, Yahoo goes down once and a while, and gets hacked into every so often. Usually nothing that is not fixed within 24 hours though. You are sure to find something to keep you busy at Yahoo, and you won’t even have to whip out your credit card once.
-Yahoo is available in other languages as well as English.
