Ask yourself a number of questions before joining.

Gym memberships and monthly fees can be pretty expensive so it is important ask a number of telling questions before you decide to write the check.
First and foremost, Will you actually use the place? There is no bigger waste of money than an unused gym membership. Gyms love people who sign up but don't show up...it means they can sign up more and more people and the place won't get too crowded.
Ask if they have a trial membership package to see if you can fit regular workouts into your schedule and to see if you actually like going. Be wary of a gym that does not give you this option.
Ask what their membership policy is concerning numbers...do they keep signing people up until the doors are busting off the place, or do they have reasonable limits. You will not have fun if you sign up and find that you spend most of your precious workout time standing in line for a treadmill. You should also visit the gym at the times you plan to fit your workout into your daily schedule.
Do not go for an orientation at lunchtime if you plan to work out at 5:30 pm. You will want to see just how busy it gets at the busiest times of the day.
If you join a chain, make sure you ask what if any the restrictions are about using other gyms in that particular chain. Some gyms let you use all of their facilities some make you sign for a more expensive package first.
Ask how often they replace the equipment. Gym technology is constantly being updated and some machines can be obsolete in a matter of months. If the machines look worn and old you should probably not join that gym because they will most likely be "under repair" when you want to use them.
Ask if they provide massage and physiotherapy services and or discounts. A good gym should have an on call masseuse and a house physio. A good gym will also give you a full fitness assessment when you join and draw up a plan for you to meet your fitness goals. If you arrive and all you get is a quick look around and the directions to the locker room you should probably not join that gym.
Finally and most importantly you should ask yourself why you want to join a gym. For some people its a social thing and thats OK and for others its purely a fitness thing. Make sure that the gym you chose meets your needs and provides group classes such as spinning, yoga etc if meeting people is important to you.
