We Lost 709 Pounds In The Battle Of The Bulge

Jun 15 '00

Okay, this title is not an exaggeration but it may be a little misleading. We did actually lose 709 pounds but it was 70 of us that dropped the weight.

Several years ago when I was working at our local hospital 35 of its employees including me entered into a contest with 35 employees from a local nursing home in a weight loss contest. We set the contest to last for 2 months and which ever group lost the most weight as a whole would be the winner and would be the guests of honor at a party provided by the losers.

We could lose the weight however worked the best for us. We would weigh in and record any weight loss or gain every Monday or Tuesday. We all chose code names. Mine was Jelly Belly. There was also Cholesterol Kate, I Of Little Willpower, Anorexic Annie and Grumpy etc.

Losing weight is never fun, well face it is down right the pits but having my coworkers to do it with certainly helped and just almost made it fun. Most of the ladies that worked the night shift that I also worked were in on the contest and that really helped. We helped each other, watched each other, slapped a bite of food out of each others hands from time to time and shared tips and ideas as to how we could lose the weight. And of course sympathizing with each other was the most important interaction.

Naturally the nursing home had ideas on ways to trip us up so they could win. The sneaky people sent a tray of cookies and doughnuts over to the hospital one day in hopes of enticing us into a weight gain. But in the long run it didn't work as we won the contest by losing a total of 375 pounds to the nursing homes 334 pounds lost.

The moral of the whole story is that I do think that it does help to have counterparts in the weight loss game. Face it misery loves company. The whole idea was great and the competition gave us all the purpose to lose some weight that would make us all healthier. The fellowship with our coworkers was great as it was with our competitors. That all made the drudgery of losing weight a little bit more pleasant.

If you can get enough people interested I definitely recommend this method of helping you lose weight. It is amazing what a little competition and comradery can accomplish.
