In recent years, much publicity has gone to the potential power of antioxidants - an for good reason. These vitamins and minerals bond with oxidants, preventing them from doing damage to the trillions of cells that make up the human body. Oxidants, free moving molecules that are created as byproducts of every process are body performs, such as eating, moving and even breathing, ricochet through a person's bloodstream, like thousands of bullets; when they hit a cell, they cause damage to that cell's DNA. This damage leads to premature cell death, wrinkles (in skin cells) and even cancer. One of the most promising ways to prevent aging and prolong health is by preventing oxidants from doing damage.
Selenium is a mineral that is a potent antioxidant. In addition to help preventing the damage that causes aging and cancer, selenium has also been shown to protect many different parts of the body from disease. Research has been done showing that high blood levels of selenium help protect a person from contracting the variants of the Hepatitis virus, of the three (A,B, + C), C is the most deadly and there is no cure or vaccine for it. People with HIV also should consider taking selenium because research has been done showing that selenium, while taken with zinc, can greatly reduce the number of infections in and the antibiotics needed by a person with this horrible disease.
Selenium has been proven to protect against many different forms of cancer. Supplementation with selenium has been shown to reduce a person's chance of developing colon cancer. In men, selenium has been shown to reduce the chances of developing prostate cancer, a much feared disease. For people already diagnosed with cancer, research has shown that taking selenium has been effective in reducing the unpleasant side effects of chemotherapy.
A daily dosage of 200mcg of selenium has been suggested to obtain the full benefit of selenium's cancer fighting properties. Surprisingly, it is very easy to achieve more than four times this dose by eating just one ounce ( six to eight) Brazil nuts a day; for those who want to skip all the fat these nuts contain, selenium is also found in: sunflower seeds, tuna, chicken, organ meats, and fruits and vegetables grown in selenium rich soil. Selenium packs an even more powerful punch when coupled with Vitamin E. If you already take a vitamin E supplement, or are considering taking a selenium supplement, then I recommend you buy a supplement with both. Since different antioxidants prevent different substances from oxidizing, it is advantageous to try to take as many different ones as you can. Some of the better known antioxidants are: Vitamins A, C, and E; zinc, lycopene, lutein, and of course, selenium.
