Not another diet!

Dec 02 '00

Ever since having my first baby, it seems the weight just naturally arrived and like a bad guest, never left. I had many excuses for trying to lose, to be prettier, healthier, stronger, and invariably I would lose twenty pounds here, forty pounds there, but once I reached 'goal' my poor dietary and exercise habits would return and the weight I lost would return, bringing a few new friends with it.

Not only have I dieted on my own, but I have joined Weight Watchers, Over-Eaters Anonymous, TOPS and a couple of Christain based groups. I acquired a library-full of weight loss and low calorie cook books and faithfully attended meetings. For the most part, I always did very well at the beginning when my enthusiasm was high. I would easily shed the pounds and bask in glory over my achievments, but my downfall comes once I have reached the goal, and try to eat 'normally' again. (Just one bite of pie won't hurt...)

I am now in my fifties and once again I'm facing the metal monster, called a scale. I am debating if I should join another support group or try to diet on my own. The groups are excellent for instilling that GO-GETT'M attitude and they're there whenever you need a shoulder to cry on, but in the past, some groups actually lower self esteem by telling you that you can't do it by yourself, and other groups only focus on the scale... success and failure simply determined by which way the balance weight goes.

This time I have decided to make my OWN support group. There are many ladies in my age bracket who would enjoy a weekly day out, to share recipies, offer advice and simply encourage one another. I think support groups are an excellent way to work on a healthier lifestyle after all, there's a LOT of us who need it. When choosing a support group, just make sure you 'visit' a few times before joining, after all, each group is like choosing a pair of shoes... you have to find the style that fits.
