What I did before I actually quit, will help in the long run.

Oct 12 '00

I had been wanting to quit smoking for years.

Like many of you, I tried to quit a few times only to go back to it time and time again.
One reason being, I had no control of my habits. So I decided to control the habits before I quit.

The biggest fear was that I would gain weight. So I decided to go on a strict disciplinary exercise plan.
I would first get into the habit of going for my walk without a cigarette. I know that may sound ridiculous but, we go on our walks with the cigarette in tow if we are smokers. I did this first. No smoking for me when walking.

The next was, no smoking when answering the phone. It was a bit easier knowing that I could have one afterwards. But, not during the call.

The next would be no smoking after a meal. This was hard but, knowing that your digestion is interrupted by nicotine is helpful.

After that would be no smoking at the computer. I would get a big cold glass of good water, and see how long you can go without smoking. While doing this, take in deep breaths, and remind yourself, that you can indeed take in a deep breath without the cigarette as the facilitator. All of these things, the breaking of habits before hand I believe helped in the long run.

I now was years into the perfecting of the discipline. The exercise I would say is the most important. You see your body wants to heal itself. It needs the air to be forced into the lungs. Go on the walks and challenge yourself! I remember walking until I got to a certain point, and then my body would take that deep breath.
It was different than a normal breath. It was like a yawn. The kind that makes your ribcage expand. I would take my music, and ask the powers that be to help me to live with the confines of addiction.

Eventually I did get the patch, it took two tries to do it but, finally I have been smoke free for 8 months now. I did gain a little weight but, am back down again. A few pounds is not that important when it comes to your quality of life, and health. Either you want to breathe, or you want to suffocate.

My neighbor never smoked a cigarette in his life but, and he has the beginnings of emphysema. Why, because his wife smokes. She yelled at him when he told her that it was her smoking that has given him this disease. She is over weight, and has been saying she will go for a walk with me, but never does. Now she acts like I'm her rival or something. I think her husband tells her things like 'well, adnetjm has quit, she's slim, and she looks ten years younger than her age because she exercises, why can't you go with her for her walks? ' But, I'm sure that's just my ego talking. Hey if I don't say it to myself, no one else will.

Happy habit breaking kiddies.;)
